Title: my load button stopped working
Post by: dasonger on April 12, 2013, 05:03:43 PM
I have version 2.5.13 and have absolutely loved the software!!! I have a problem that just developed today when I tried to access the tournament that I will be hosting tomorrow. The load button from the game tab doesn't seem to work anymore- all load functions seem inoperable, including loading any prior saved tournament, prior blind templates, and event templates.  Prior stats from 20+ tourneys are still found, as is the database of 200+ players. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I will reply to myself as I was able to fix the problem with much effort. I had recently updated to windows explorer 10- uninstalling this update permitted tournament director to return to its former glory!!! Hope this will help others who have similar problems in the future.

This is a new issue that started to appear a few weeks ago, likely spurred by a recent Microsoft Windows update.  Thus far you are one of only 6 or 7 people that I am aware of that have hit upon this problem.  I have been working on replicating the issue so I can determine what is causing it and hopefully fix it, but I have been unsuccessful in making it happen.  I am continuing to work on it because I feel it will likely continue to affect more and more people as PCs are updated with Microsoft patches.

I'm glad you were able to get things working again.  One other person that I am aware of fixed the issue in the same way, by uninstalling Internet Explorer 10 (and going back to IE9).  In fact, here is that thread: http://www.thetournamentdirector.net/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=9647

I'm making this topic sticky so others experiencing the same issue can find it, and I'll update it as new information is found.  If anyone else is experiencing this issue, please reply to this thread and I'll add your name to my list, so when a solution is found I can update everyone.

Well, Corey, add my name to the list...

I discovered this today (I'm starting a touranment in less than an hour!) when, for some odd reason, something possessed me to print out a receipt from a prior tournament, and found that it printed incorrectly.  I went to the source file and it was rendered incorrectly on screen as well.  Then when I tried to load the tournament I had previously created for today, I found that I had the same problem that Dasonger reported earlier.  Not only could I not load, I couldn't save, save as, or find any of my templates, plus my receipt count went back to 1.  Soooo, I went back to IE 9 too, and all is well.  I also copied my preferences file from a previous backup.

FYI, I run on Windows 7.  Thanks for all of your hard work!  (and now I can run my tournament today, and hopefully win!)

The bug is affecting the Active-X control used by the TD software to show file dialogs, font dialogs, and color dialogs.  When the TD attempts to call the various dialogs, nothing happens.  This is why it appears as if the Load, Save, and Save As... buttons don't work.  The TD calls on the file dialog, and since it doesn't work the TD gets back a "null" value, which is what it gets back when one presses Cancel on a file dialog, so the TD assumes that you've canceled your action.  Thus, nothing happens.

As far as I know, it shouldn't have any other effect.

... or find any of my templates, plus my receipt count went back to 1.

OK, two different issues, but they could be related.  First, the TD software will never, ever delete any of your saved templates or tournaments, or anything else.  It just won't do it.  So, either your templates are still there (somewhere) or something else deleted them.   Based on the second part of your statement, it sounds like your preferences file was reset.  I honestly cannot see how this could be related to the main issue.  Regardless, if your preferences were reset then your receipt count would go back to 1, and if you're using a different Data Store than the default Data Store, it's possible your Data Stores configuration was reset, and therefore pressing "Load Template" on one of the various tabs would, by default, show a different folder than you were previously using to store your templates, which would make it look like they've gone missing.  Of course, since the main issue here was affecting you, pressing "Load Template" would not have done anything, so you must have been looking for a template some other way...

Is there any chance you (anyone being affected by this) have additional Internet Explorer add-ons installed?  Since IE10 has been pushed to a lot of people by now, and this is still affecting only a few people, maybe the common factor is some third-party add-on that is installed?

Sorry I haven't been able to follow up on this for you, as I've been quite busy these past few days.

...or find any of my templates, plus my receipt count went back to 1.

I didn't mean to imply that TD made any of these changes; I do indeed understand that it will not do that.  Plus I was able to find all of my saves and template files when I went outside of the program.  The problem was occurring when I tried to access those files from inside the program.  Nevertheless, it did indeed happen, but I did make something of a discovery today.

I was trying to recreate the conditions by which all of this started to happen, and in so doing I recalled trying to load up a previous tournament by loading it up directly from my saves file; that is, instead of launching the program and then loading, I would click the saved file and then the program would launch.  What I discovered is that when this method was used, apparently these saves files were associated with version 2.6.b5, which of course is no longer valid.  When this failed to launch, I then went back to launching TD 3.1.1 from my desktop shortcut, and apparently this was where the preferences file was altered, or more likely, was now going to a default preference file?  Naturally, this now had all of my settings reset, and my receipt counter was now showing 1 again.  So at least now I know that I have to reassociate my saved tournament files to TD 3.1.1

Is this making any sense at all?

I think I'm going to try to reload IE10 again and see what happens when I have the time, as I still have to see if my receipts will render correctly.

No worries.  I just wanted to be sure you understood the software wouldn't delete things out from under you.  And I also wanted anyone else who might be reading the thread to understand that, too.

Complete sense.  When 2.6.b5 loaded, it probably did not understand the preferences file (some new type of object was added in 3.0 or 3.1 or 3.1.1) and therefore reverted back to a default version of the preferences.  In other words, it reset all of your preferences.  I just wish there was a way for you to get your preferences file back.  It should rename the current preferences file (the one it can't understand) before creating a new preferences file.  That way it isn't lost.  I'm going to add that to the to-do list.  Of course that wouldn't help this situation since we can't go back and add this to previous versions, but might save some headaches going forward.

And I wonder why Windows still had .tdt files associated with version 2.6.b5.  The install of 3.1.1 (and/or 3.0 and/or 3.1) should have updated that association.  I'll have to look into that.

For anyone experiencing this issue and willing to help out a little:

And thank you.

* Edit: You'll likely get a bunch of permission request dialogs saying "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer" with "Program name: Registry Editor".  Say "yes" to each one.  It won't change anything, it's just running "regedit" to dump registry information.  I tested this script on a PC with UAC disabled, so I didn't get any of these dialogs and thus I forgot to mention them.

I just wish there was a way for you to get your preferences file back.

No worries here, as I still have a copy of an older preferences file from prior to 3.1.  I just copied and pasted and viola, all is well.

And I wonder why Windows still had .tdt files associated with version 2.6.b5.  The install of 3.1.1 (and/or 3.0 and/or 3.1) should have updated that association.  I'll have to look into that.

I think I might have an answer for this; it might be something that I did myself.

Within the last couple of weeks, a friend of mine ran his own tournament.  As the tournament progressed, I couldn't help but question the effectiveness of his blinds schedule; at some points it just didn't make sense to me.  I asked him to send me a copy of his tournament file so that I could take a look at it and perhaps make some suggestions on how to improve it.  What I forgot about was that he was running an earlier version of TD (2.6), so when I opened the file directly (outside of TD, of course!), this file had an association to 2.6.  Is it possible that perhaps then all of my tournament files now would have their associations reverted back to 2.6?

For anyone experiencing this issue and willing to help out a little:

Consider it done.  You should have my email by now.

Offtopic, but one of the advantages of using dropbox as a datastore is that it saves 30 days worth of revisions to all files. So that if I accidentally delete something or make a change that I can't remember what I did, I can get back the previous version.

Is there a way to change the default location of preferences so that I could store that on dropbox as well?

I don't think so.  Windows just knows "TDT=Open with C:\Program Files\The Tournament Director 3\TD.exe".  With 2.6.b5, it's likely it was still set to "C:\Program Files\The Tournament Director 2\TD.exe", since version 2 and 3 install in different folders.  Any install of the TD should reset this association.  Looks like it just didn't do it for you, for some reason.  You can always change it yourself.  Right-click on a .tdt file and select Open with, then select Choose default program, then you'll probably have to use the Browse... button to browse to "C:\Program Files\The Tournament Director 3\TD.exe".  Make sure the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file checkbox is checked.

Yes, in version 3.2 (in beta right now, but very solid).  It's even documented in the user manual: section 39 "Advanced Customization".

That's a great idea, by the way, storing those files in your Dropbox.  Especially since they'll never get big enough to even make a dent in the storage limits of Dropbox.

OK a small update...

I had some time today, so I thought I would try downloading IE10 again.  One thing that I noticed was that at the start of the download I was asked if I would like to download a version that included "Enhanced for AOL".  This had me thinking that perhaps this might be where the problem might reside.  I proceeded to download the enhanced version (which was the version that I had downloaded previously) just to see what happened.  As I expected, the result was the same as the last time, as I was again unable to use the "Load" or "Save" or "Save As..." buttons.  So, I went back and downdated to IE9, but this time I updated to IE10 without the enhancements, hoping that this time it would work.  Well, I'm afraid that the results were the same as with the AOL enhancements, so I'm guessing that the problem was not limited to those enhancements as I had hoped, but rather that there is a broader issue at hand here.

As a side note, the other thing that I had noticed is that my receipts were rendered differently when I used IE10.  I'm guessing that during the update the source file now reads the code differently (I have a couple of cells that use rotated text); perhaps the code that I used is now outdated under IE10, and I would need to figure out how to change it so that it will render the way I want it to (I know that TD is not responsible for any of this; I just thought that it might be useful to mention it just as a heads-up to others who might be interested in this.).

Thank you for the update, Scotty.  This is exactly the kind of thing I would be searching for.  It's a shame it didn't turn out to be the culprit, but I certainly appreciate the effort.

Hmm, it could be that IE10 is rendering the content differently.  This would certainly be true in past IE updates (as well as with other browsers).  But it shouldn't be the case, because IE now operates in different modes, allowing a more complete backwards-compatibility.  So even though the browser was updated to version 10, it should still be rendering the content as if were IE7 or IE8.  I hope you were able to work around this with just a small tweak to your receipt template.

Corey,

Recently purchased the software and then upgrade to 3.2.1.  Load button worked a few times and now has stopped.  Read this tread and didn't see that this issue has been completely resolved, unless I missed something.

Please help.

Thanks.

Hi Joe, I responded to the email you sent to me regarding this.  Unfortunately, there's no solution at the moment.  It's still affecting only a handful of people and unfortunately I am not one of those people, so I have no been able to debug the problem.  As I mentioned, uninstalling IE10 has fixed it for some people.  Your mileage may vary.

Hi, the "load" button issue has been resolved by downgrading back to IE9.

...I have noticed, however, that with this new version of TD, some of the buttons and/or "Titles" of fields appear as "comments" (ie: "!!sometext.profile.sometext!!). --- Is this by design?  Or, is there a bug or corruption somewhere?

If you require a screen shot, please let me know. (You should issue be outlined in a separate thread?)

Thanks,

It sounds like one or more language files are missing or corrupt.  Download and install the software again and see if the problem is resolved.

Hi Corey,

Thank you for the suggestion above.  Downloading and re-installing the software resolved almost all of the "comments" issues noted above.  What remains is...

On the "Game" tab > on the right-side pane >  for all three sections (Buy-ins, Rebuys, Add-ons) > the banner of the box/fields appear as follows:

Profile: <i>!!General.Profile.Master!!</i> (Default)

Do you have any additional suggestions to help resolve this issue?

Thanking you in advance,
Al

It's in the same set of language files.  I can't imagine how re-installing the software would correct some of the missing language strings but not all of them.  Have you selected a different language on the Preferences tab?

Sorry, let me clarify... I meant re-installng IE9 but now that I think of it, I didn't have to re-install IE9 either. Once I downgraded from IE10, IE9 was automatically my default browser version. ...In TD v3.2.1 > Preferences > Language > my default language (and only option in the drop-down list) is "English, US".  Thanks.

I just used the "system Info" button on the Preferenes tab and noticed that Browser Language = "en-US" while User Language = "en-CA". --- Would this make any difference to the behaviour of TD?  Thanks.

OK, I have an update:

Well, Corey, add my name to the list...

Yesterday, with some time on my hands, I decided that I would try and download IE10 again, just to see if anything had changed.  Much to my surprise, TD now works properly using IE10; namely, the "Load", "Save", and "Save as..." buttons are all working.  Whether it was an update by you or IE, I don't know, but I thought I would just report that all is well.  Perhaps anyone of the handful of people who were having issues with IE10 in the past might wish to try updating again to see if it now works for you, too.

As a side note, the other thing that I had noticed is that my receipts were rendered differently when I used IE10.  I'm guessing that during the update the source file now reads the code differently (I have a couple of cells that use rotated text); perhaps the code that I used is now outdated under IE10, and I would need to figure out how to change it so that it will render the way I want it to.

I figured this one out, too.  I initially found that if I changed IE10 to "Compatibility Mode", my receipts would render correctly.  The only problem with this was that now some newer websites that I visited would be rendered incorrectly.  A better solution was to add a line of code to my receipts template, as you first suggested, Corey.

Here is the line that I added to the Head section of the template:  <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE9" >

I know that there might not be too many people having this problem, if any, but just thought that I would share, just in case.

The TD doesn't try to detect your language.  There's only one language catalog shipped with the software, so detecting the system language setting really wouldn't matter because the TD only knows English.  :)

If you haven't already, try installing the TD software again.  You don't need to uninstall it, just install it again.  That will just replace all of the code and language files.

No luck. Re-installing the software did not resolve the "comments" issue on the Game tab.  If someone can please provide the "wording" of the 3 banners (Buy-in,  Rebuys, Add-ons) I can create new profiles and set them to default, along with, deleting the corrupt ones.  I'll see if that is a sufficient workaround. Thanks.

The name of the default profile you get, for buy-ins, rebuys, and add-ons, is "Master".

In fact, you could just edit the language file (C:\Program Files\The Tournament Director 3\lang\en-us\messages.properties) and add the following line:

General.Profile.Master=Master

That seems to be all that's missing from yours.  Still can't figure out how that can happen.

Thanks, Corey.  The entry already exists in the file.  I think I'll try to create a new profile within the software.  I'll call it "master" and set it to default, then delete the original one.

Do you have a default tournament configured?  That might explain why it continues to come up this way.  If at some point their was a language file issue causing each of the default profiles to be named in this bogus way, and you saved a tournament and made it the default, it would no longer matter if the language file issue was fixed since the profiles in that saved tournament are already misnamed.

I think you've nailed it, Corey.  I read the above note and proceeded to launch TD.  I went to Preferences tab> Config Files button> and reset the "Default Tournament" field > OK button. ...I then exited and re-launched TD.  The Game tab now shows "Profile: Master (Default)" without the quotes for Buy-in, Rebuys, and Add-ons.  Thank you very much for your continued support, Corey.  I do appreciate it. Have a great day!

I use Chrome as my default browser, and I have yet to have an issue wtih TTD. The version of IE depends on when you got your computer. Since yours is telling you you have IE 9 and not IE 10, you should be good to go. Add ons for the browser are programs for the browser to customize and personalize the browser to your preference.  This help some?

How do you install internet explore 9?. When I downloaded it said that internet explorer 9 was already installed. I was using chrome on windows 8. Is this the problem? Can TD3 be used on Win 8? on chrome? what are add-ons? please explain in ordinary language guys. please spell it out for me. cheers

The TD runs inside of Internet Explorer, so IE is required (no other browsers work with the TD and it doesn't matter what browsers you have installed or use on a daily basis).

If you're running Windows 8, you can only run IE10 and there's no way to roll back to IE9.  Microsoft made it that way on purpose.  Unfortunately for this situation, it means you can't try that method to fix the load/save buttons.

Something that I haven't suggested before is to upgrade to IE11 and give that a shot.  If you upgrade to IE11 and it doesn't work, you could then uninstall IE11, effectively rolling back to IE10, and see if that has an effect.  Seems a bit superfluous but someone posted that the Windows automatic update to IE10 broke the TD (load/save button issue), uninstalling IE10 fixed it, and later this person was able to install IE10 and the TD continued to function correctly.  So, since we don't know what's causing the issue, but this could be completely irrelevant but you never know.

*IE11 is currently in "developer preview" stage.  You can download it here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/ie-11-worldwide-languages
Actually, it might not yet be available for Windows 8, so that may not be an option, either.

Has anyone found a solid solution to the load button not working.  It is not working for my system also.  I am running Win 7 pro 64 bit with all the latest system updates.
I uninstalled it and re-installed latest version of TD, but same issues on this system.
Also when I start the program it wants admin system rights when starting.. i.e. screen dims and asks permission prior to starting this app.

I am also running the latest version on my laptop too, which works there (windows xp pro all system updates) but also have issues:

Update issue - when I updated my version from 2.5 to 3.2 I have been getting some errors when clicking on the load button:

Windows - No Disk
Exception Processing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6f7c 4 75b6f7c  75b6f7c with the option of Cancel, Try Again, Continue

... so I cancel twice, then it is fine (the cancel is the only button out of the three that works
Not sure what is causing this but it is another issue that normally does not happen.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Unfortunately, no, there's been no *real* progress on this.  Well over 50% of the cases of this issue that have been reported to me have been resolved by uninstalling IE10.  For many of those particular cases, installing IE10 after fixing the problem by uninstalling IE10 did not cause the issue to reappear.  Most don't really care what version of IE is installed, so they leave their system as-is after removing IE10.  But so far I haven't heard of anyone having this issue, then uninstalling IE10 (and thus fixing the issue), and then re-installing IE10 and having the issue return.  Rather, once it's fixed it has stayed fixed.

Normal, expected, as designed.  There are several reasons for this.  For example, the TD installs a Microsoft Active-X control to allow it to use system file, font, and color dialogs.  Without admin privileges, the install would not work properly.  The "install" doesn't happen at actual application installation time, instead the install occurs on-demand.  That is, when the TD application declares it needs to use the control, it will be installed if it's not already there.

Can't say what this is, but it isn't coming from the TD (at least not directly).  Could be that the TD is somehow misunderstanding where on your system that your "Documents" folder resides, and it is using an incorrect drive letter when opening the "Load" dialog.  Have you modified any of the config file preferences?  This would be the "Config Files" button on the Preferences tab.

To be clear, I can't say whether or not this is IE10 related.  It might be coincidental that it has affected many people when IE was upgraded to 10, and that it was fixed by downgrading to IE9.  I know that sounds a bit silly (and even sillier to type), but there are plenty of people using IE10 with the TD with absolutely no problems, myself included.  In fact, I've installed IE10 on several PCs and still cannot reproduce this issue.  This one has proved very frustrating.

I am having the same issue. I was using The Tournament Director 2 and the auto save and load buttons stopped working. We had just installed Norton 360 a few days before. I decided to upgrade to The Tournament Director 3. Everything worked fine until I went to actually run the tournament. Had to input everything by hand. Nothing would load or save. Still having the same issue. We are using Internet Explorer 10. May try what other suggested and go back to 9.  Bob

Thanks for the update, BobP.  This has probably been the most frustrating issue I've encountered so far simply because I haven't yet figured out what is causing it, nor can I reproduce it.

Thanks for the tidbit on Norton 360.  I'll try installing it and seeing what happens.  If you do try rolling back to IE9, I would appreciate it if you would let us know the outcome.

Hi All. Been using the TD for a number of years and this is my first post. I thought I would share this with you. I hadn't had any issues and ran my usual monthly tournament about two weeks ago with no problems. Yesterday I was setting up for a new tournament today and I encountered this problem with no loads, saves etc working. I can not recall any update or download during that time. Last night I updated the laptop to the new windows 8.1 and all these problems disappeared. I was able to load my tournament and it went ahead without a hitch. BTW great software and I enjoy using it. Still trying to learn a few aspects but thanks very much.

Windows 7 64b. I did install IE10 right around this problem started happening. I've also updated the software to it's latest version. I've since rolled it back to IE9 and I'm still having the following issues:

Save does not work.
Load does not work.

This renders the software basically unusable for me as I can load a tournament from a template but then cannot even do s "save as".

Any progress on this issue?

Unfortunately no.  Still have been unable to replicate it.  I've tested directly on 4 desktops, 2 laptops, and 4 virtual machines.  I've installed various anti-virus software, all Microsoft patches, and even several variants of malware.  I just can't make it happen.

Hi Corey,
I am running two Commercial level 2 versions of TD 3.2.1 on two separate laptops and now, as of 3 days ago one has succumbed to this problem.
Unfortunately I am not as computer savvy as alot of your forum users are, but what I did do is click on the previous version 2.5.11 in my start menu and excluding the errors that showed it did take me to the main menu and allow selection of load and save as.
Willing to assist in anyway I can. Kev

but what I did do is click on the previous version 2.5.11 in my start menu and excluding the errors that showed it did take me to the main menu and allow selection of load and save as.

That is highly unusual and unexpected.  Both versions use the same control to display file dialogs, so if broken for one it should be broken for the other.

The best thing I can recommend is to roll back IE to the previous version, whatever that may be.  For reasons still unknown, this has had the most success (I'd give it at least a 50% success rate, and it's probably considerably higher).  Uninstalling IE will roll back to the previous version.  Give that a try and then run the TD again to see if it fixes the issue.  To rollback (for Windows 7/Vista/XP):

(1) Click on the "Start" button and type "Programs and Features" in the search box
(2) Click on the "View installed updates" in the left pane of the menu
(3) Go over to the "Uninstall an update" screen and scroll down to the "Microsoft Windows" section
(4) Select Internet Explorer (9 or 10 or 11 or whatever version is installed) and click "Uninstall"
(5) Restart your PC

Hi Corey, my load button stopped working both for loading a tournament and for loading a layout.
I have version 10 of IE on Win8.
I'm using 3.3 latest version of TD
#EDIT
Also the "save as" for tournament saving... and I cannot set the autosave :(
Title: Re: my load button stopped working
Post by: Corey Cooper on March 09, 2014, 08:07:20 PM
Hey Linker_Split, it's all the same dialog.  Loading anything, or saving when the application doesn't know the name of what you're saving (a new tournament, for example), or checking auto-save (because it has to ask for the filename the first time), all of these things display the file dialog, and that's what's broken somehow.

I still don't know what the root cause of this issue is, and I still can't replicate it myself.  Rolling back IE has been the most successful method of fixing the issue.  See the instructions in my last reply (just before your message) for rolling back IE.  And cross your fingers.  If rolling back to IE9 fixes the issue, and you're feeling brave, you could then upgrade again to IE10.  Since I can't replicate this I can't say if it will work for you or not, but some have reported doing this and the file dialog still working.

I also had someone very recently report that rolling IE back to the previous version did NOT fix the issue, but afterwards they disabled all Internet Explorer plug-ins and that DID fix the issue.  Your mileage may vary.

OK, same issue (can't load, save, etc).  No problem for the past year.  Yesterday I updated from TD 3.1 to TD 3.3 as recommended.
All I can do is start new from an old session.  Cannot save or auto-save.
How about a real fix from the folks at TD.

FYI, This is Win 7 & IE 11.  I have disabled ALL IE plug-ins.  HELP! HELP! or I will have to look for a better tool that actually works and is supported.

Roll back IE.  This has been the most successful and most consistent solution.

To uninstall Internet Explorer 10 or 11:

(1) Click on the "Start" button and type "Programs and Features" in the search box (or type "Programs and Features" in the search charm if you're running Windows 8)
(2) Click on the "View installed updates" in the left pane of the menu
(3) Go over to the "Uninstall an update" screen and scroll down to the "Microsoft Windows" section
(4) Select Internet Explorer 10 or 11 and click "Uninstall"
(5) Restart your PC

Sorry to hear it.  :(

This does work for most, but I do have a few documented cases where it didn't work.  Unfortunately I don't know of a better solution.  If it were me, I would probably try moving to a newer version of IE, and/or back to an older version of IE, just to go through the install/uninstall process, since this seems to be what triggers the fix for this issue.

I'm hoping someone can come up with a solution for this soon. I'm in the middle of a season and now I'm dead in the water. No saving, no loading. I'm back to recording everything with pen and paper. TD3 has been reduced to a clock on my laptop as of right now.

I've tried everything I've read here. IE 10 is imbedded into windows 8. It can't be deleted. It can only be disabled. No turning back the clock to an earlier version as far as I can tell.  :-\

Yes, that is unfortunately true.  And rolling IE back (or forward) hasn't worked for everyone (although it works for a high percentage of those affected).  If you have Windows 8, you can upgrade to IE 11, or roll back to IE 10.  Have you tried that?

OK, I'm not sure what all transpired here but..... My TD3 would not load or save starting with a league game I had on Oct. 4. I tried everything listed here. The other day, after an MS update and reboot, none of my MS programs worked at all. I did a system restore to Oct. 16 (my earliest option). Since then, TD3 has been working fine. Loading, saving etc. The restore date was after it first started acting up so I'm not sure what it was that worked but I'm a happy camper again in any case.

I am having the same issue.  Windows 7 SP1 IE 11 (also rolled back to 10 and didn't work).  I did some Microsoft windows security updates last night which may have caused it.

One band aid workaround if you need to load an old tournament is to double click on the tournament name from the saves folder.  It seems like a backdoor way to open the file.  I can't seem to get it working the correct way...

Any held would be greatly appreciated!

Another update:  I rolled back to IE 10 which didn't fix it.  I then reinstalled IE 11 and it still didn't work.  I then updated IE 11 with the two available security updates which must have uninstalled during the roll back and now the load button seems to be working again.  I am not sure if the reboot fixed it or adding in the two IE 11 security updates.  It seems to work now (or in a pinch open the save file you want by going to the saves folder and clicking it).

You could try different anti-virus.  I suggest Malware Bytes (https://www.malwarebytes.org) and Microsoft Security Essentials (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download).

Disabling IE extensions/add-ons/plug-ins is something else you could try.

As previously noted, the uninstalling of IE (to force a roll back to a previous version) is really the only proven-to-work-most-of-the-time solution to this issue.  Unfortunately, if that doesn't work, I don't know what else to do.  Steps for doing that can be found in this topic (http://www.thetournamentdirector.net/forums/index.php?topic=4343.msg20157#msg20157).

As Windows 10 comes pre-packed with Internet Explorer 11 and Microsoft Edge, I don't know if you can rollback IE with a Windows 10 install. I have to revert from Windows 10 back to Windows 7 to get TD3 to be operable. (NOTE: This occurred with both TD3.3 and TD 3.4b1).

I posted this in the General Discussion area.

"Something interesting I noticed. I upgraded to Win 10 and one of the first things I tried was to see if TD had any problems.
Everything worked fine. I saw the above post about IE 11 so I started IE and checked to see if I indeed had IE 11, which I do, now I am having the same problems with the load and save buttons. This only happened AFTER I ran IE 11."

I'm still having the same problem when starting the TD in the normal way, but if I start by clicking a saved tournament and starting the TD everything seems to work ( save, save as, and load buttons ). I'm not sure if this helps with the debugging but it make work for other people as well.

I downloaded Windows 10 about 2 months ago and tried using TD but the load buttons and other buttons would not work.  So we couldn't' use TD for that tournament.  I might be hosting another tournament this upcoming Friday and after looking into my computer, it has IE11.  I tried to download IE9 but it says it's not compatible with Windows 10 64 bit.

Brunen: it's the top priority item after I get version 3.4 finished.  I'd like to move to Chromium and be forever done with IE.  But the TD is so tailored to IE it's going to be a very difficult transition, and frankly I'm not certain I have the technical expertise to pull it off.  But that's the plan.

I found this thread because I am having the same issue. HERE IS HOW I FIXED IT:

1) Open Internet Explorer and go to Settings > Internet Options
2) Click the Advanced tab
3) Scroll down to Security > and check the box for "Allow software to run or install even if the signature is invalid", and then click Apply
4) Go to the Security tab and click the button Custom Level...
5) Scroll down to the Active X Controls and Plugins section
6) Set everything to ENABLE (you probably only need to do this with specific ones, but I did it with them all because I am so frustrated with this error!)
7) Click Apply and then OK. Now close Internet Explorer and open The Tournament Director
The buttons should now work.

I am using Windows 8 and have Internet Explorer 11 installed. I hope this works for those of you who cannot use the other workaround mentioned.

That's great.  Thanks for the info, i_hate_windows.  For the record, none of those settings are supposed to be able to affect applications like the TD.  According to Microsoft.  Very frustrating.

My button stopped working just now. I finished printing some stats, shutdown TD but did not shutdown my laptop. I recorded some audio files for TD on my desktop and when finished started TD on the laptop so I could transfer the audio files. TD started but when I went to load the button wouldn't work. So I restarted my laptop only to find that windows was doing an update. I waited for the update to complete and tried TD load button again. No luck. Got message windows had problem installing updates and suggested I search the web (08x00705b4). Since I am running windows 10 I don't see IE icon so I decided to look at the latest updates that were installed. Two new ones from today were there. The first one I uninstalled was KB3124266. No luck. Next I uninstalled the other update KB3135174. No luck either. So I went & did what I-Hate_windows suggested. No luck there. Currently using back door approach. Loading the file under the file folder.

Got the same problem with this load button, tried everything that I saw and nothing. Got a problem to load templates as well. What can I do?

Be aware that other buttons are affected. One important one is Backup un database tab.

Corey, Anytime you try to save anything, game, template etc the button acts like it was depressed but nothing happens. Ran a tournament but the only way it got saved was if I used auto-save. Tried to do a back-up, same thing, button depressed nothing happened. I found something else that was curious. When I use the file folder explorer to look at TD  I could not find a folder that said SAVES. So I used file explorer to look for the folder and it did show me the saved files but NOT the folder. I would try to reload TD but without a current back up think that is too dangerous. Is there a way to back up the database without TD that TD would accept when it's reloaded?

The saves folder is typically in:

C:\Users\<your-windows-login>\Documents\The Tournament Director 2\Data

That's the default "Data Store" (although it can be changed if you choose to do so).

To manually "backup" the TD's data, just copy that whole folder somewhere.

FYI, the "save" button should work, if you've already got a tournament loaded.  The issue is with the "select file" dialog.  Pressing "Save" with a new tournament has the same effect as pressing the "Save As..." button, since the TD needs you to choose a path and file name.  But if it already knows the file name, pressing the "Save" button should simply save it without presenting a file selection dialog.  So that should work fine.

The best thing to do is to try the various solutions that have worked:

- http://www.thetournamentdirector.net/forums/index.php?topic=4343.msg21526#msg21526
- Rollback Internet Explorer to a previous version
- Temporarily disable any anti-virus or anti-malware software installed

This problem appears to have multiple causes, some of which clearly have not been discovered yet.  This makes it difficult to diagnose and determine a foolproof solution.

Just to reiterate, my number one priority right now is finishing version 3.4, since it is so close to being done.  After that, my number one priority will determining a way forward, hopefully by ditching Internet Explorer baggage and moving to a new framework, leaving this problem and others like it behind in the process.

Corey, I understand your  priorities. I did try the other solutions mentioned but to no avail. So I did a couple of things. First I did figure out how to backup the database without using TD so I didn't loose any data. I reloaded windows and then reloaded TD 3 software. Everything working ok now.

Adding a native file browser to the application.  I've tried to avoid doing this as long as I could because it's a hack at best, but clearly it has to be done, at least in the interim until IE can be done away with.  It will be available in 3.4 beta 2, which I will release as soon as I possibly can.

If you're still experiencing this issue, I would highly encourage you to try version 3.4 beta 2.  It has the built-in file dialog as a fix and I'd really love to hear feedback on whether or not it works for you.

Corey,

I might be about to try to "teach Granny to suck eggs..."  :P, but...
In a number of recent applications I've produced I've hit very similar "odd" issues as reported in previous posts which turned out to be:

[Egg sucking mode: ON]
What IE emulation is TD using?
The following might be of use: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/patricka/2015/01/12/controlling-webbrowser-control-compatibility/  (https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/patricka/2015/01/12/controlling-webbrowser-control-compatibility/)

i.e. Force the IE emulation to a known version.
[Egg sucking mode: OFF]

Regards
 Rich

Excellent suggestion.  Unfortunately the TD runs as an HTML application, and as such the rules are a little different.  I have been able to get the main window to use a more recent emulation mode, but the dialog windows are stuck in IE 7 world.  :(

Will be exploring moving to Chromium or some flavor of it after 3.4 is released.

Similar problem.  New purchase and install of 3.3 went on a Win10 machine with IE 11 (no choice, it's that or nothing with Win10 unless you want to start frogging around with virtual machines).  Worked well enough for about 4 or 5 days.  Set up tourneys, players db, various templates, added events, ran through several tourney simulations... starting, busting players out, pausing, balancing & collapsing tables, etc., etc.  Today "my load button stopped working"... in fact, all(?) of the buttons to load, save, save as, browse, etc. stopped working.  I COULD start directly from one of my .tdt files, but couldn't modify and save my changes, etc., etc.

Have communicated with "support".  Have downloaded and installed 3.4.b3.  All appears to be well... so far.  Hope it werkz!

If you've not downloaded version 3.4, please do.  It contains a workaround for this issue.  http://www.thetournamentdirector.net/download

I did download and it has improved but not eliminated the problem.
