Another Points system that works

Hello Everyone.

This is my first post on here, so hopefully I get it right.

I have had the TD for about 2 years now, and absolutely love it.  Corey is a Genius!  Recently, I was having problems with my program, and Corey walked me through the steps of getting it to work again.  I asked several unrelated questions to my problem, and Corey referred me to the Forum, which I never knew existed. 

As I was viewing a lot of the forums, I noticed all of the different point schemes that people use in their tournaments, and thought I would share my points scheme for my tournaments.  We run a league of 6 months/12 weeks.  We play every other Saturday and average 20 players.  We take $2 from each person's buy-in and put it in an envelope, and at the end of the 6 month season, we have a tournament of champions, where the top 8 players in the league play for the "free" money.  When we started this tournament, we had problems with the point system because several players were tied in points.  We had to figure out a way to only have 8 players, so anyone who was tied for points below 7th place would play a small turbo tournament, and the winner(s) would then play in the T.O.C tournament.

We have since modified our point structure so that it is next to impossible for 2 people to have the same points at the end of the season.  This is the points scheme we use.

Buy-in = 0.25 points (Everyone who plays gets 0.25 points, gives incentive to show up every tournament)
1st place = # of players / 0.50 (20 players = 10 points)
2nd place = # of players / 0.33 (20 players = 6.67 points)
3rd place = # of players / 0.25 (20 players = 5.0 points)
4th place = 2.25 points
5th place = 2.00 points
6th place = 1.75 points
7th place = 1.50 points
8th place = 1.25 points
9th place - xx place = 0 additional points.

After looking at some of the other members' points structures, I wonder if anyone else has problems with people tying at the end of the season.

Please let me hear all your thoughts on our point schemes, and if anyone has anything better, I would love to hear it.  We are always tweaking with our layouts.

I have the formula for TD to calculate the points if anyone wants it.  Just email me and let me know.

I'm not sure why your points are all so low.

I know having 10000's etc is silly. But you have very small fractions.

Why not 1 point for playing, 8th = 5, 7th = 6 etc..
Just have whole numbers.

I think this will save some confusion.

We use a system that is slightly more complicated, but works well for our league (avg ~17ppg)

Points = (10 x number of players) / (place finished + 0.5)

Eg 2nd in a 18 player tourney = (10x18)/(2+0.5) = 72

It's proportional to the number of players and I feel it gives enough 'participation' points as well as rewards the podium places with a significant increase in points.
It actually works out to be pretty similar to the cash payout of the last few tables at the WSOP main event:

 Hi Guys/Gals

 1st post, but wanted to share in a thread thats seemed appropriate.
I have run a Bar League for almost 3 years now and use a formula taken from
BLUFF Magazine's Poker Tour I was in a couple of years back,(Thanks Jeff)
 It takes into account the # of players and rewards players accordingly. The more players entered the more points awarded, the less players= less points.
 To be honest I'm not too sure why the values are what they are, I just know they work
really well. You'll notice the point spread between one place to the next spreads out the deeper you finish, but the difference between 33rd and 32nd is only .75 points.
 We use this for all tournaments and most seasons are 4-6 months 2 games per week.

 In the Formula Box:   10*sqrt(n)/sqrt(r)*4.162   

As I said... why multiply by 4.162?? Have no Idea, but it works. Here's a spread sheet for 34 players.

I use:

Sqrt(a*b^2/c) / (d + 1)

a = Number of Players in Event
b = Player Buy-in Expense
       (initial buy-in)
c = Player Total Expense
      (total  buy-in with add-on)
d = Player Finish (rank)

Your points are slightly less if you finish in the same spot buying the add-on than if you finished there without buying the add-on.  Our July tournament had 17 players and the points ended like this (2nd, which was me, and 4th did not buy the addon)

When you finish in the bottom half, we don't feel the difference is that great.  A formula that takes this into account and doesn't give an "even distribution" of points is much more representative of a players long term play.
