League Members can't open attachments
« on: January 06, 2009, 03:59:54 PM »
Hello.

I have been emailing the results of our games to my league members and not everyone has been able to open the files.  They are reporting to me that it only shows as a dat file in the email.

I have been emailing the game summary export file and the year to date stats export file both of which are saved in the html format.

Any thoughts or suggestions I can offer to my league members on how they can open these attachments?

Thanks in advance.

Sass

What email program/service are you using?

I use Microsoft Outlook 2003.  Note that some league members can open the files and others cannot.  I have asked them to make sure that their html is enabled in their email and they claim it is.

Thanks again

Is the attachment on their end named winmail.dat?  Have you tried google to find a solution?

sass, the problem could be any number of things, really.  Are you "attaching" the file to the email, or are you opening the HTML file and using copy/paste?

Your email program may be modifying the contents before it is sent.  Your ISP may be modifying the email before it leaves your email server.  The recipient's mail server may be modifying the email when it arrives.  The recipient's email program may be modifying it or displaying it incorrectly.

If some recipients can view it and some cannot, the problem lies most likely on the other end.  Probably lies in whatever the recipients are using to view the email (is it a program on their PC, like Outlook or Outlook Express or Thunderbird, or is it web based email?).  But with all of the spam and spam filters, their ISP could certainly be guilty of modifying the email before they receive it.

If you want, send the email to support@thetournamentdirector.net and I'll look at it.
