Update Jan 18, 2009: Version 2.5.5 contains a fix for this problem. Please download the latest version of the Tournament Director if you are experiencing this issue:
http://www.thetournamentdirector.net/download.html
A number of you are reporting that file dialogs are no longer working. That means that when you press the "Load" button to load a tournament, or the "Save As..." button to save a tournament, or any button that would open a file browser dialog, essentially nothing happens.
It seems at the moment that this may have been caused by a recent update to Internet Explorer 7. I am currently researching this issue. As always, it's easiest if I can reproduce the problem myself so I can try to work through it, but I have been unsuccessful thus far.
So this will be the main topic for this issue. If you are experiencing this problem and can provide help or information, please post to this topic. I'm going to point other open topics to this one.
As a first stab at this, here's something to try:
1) Close the TD and any open instances of Internet Explorer. For good measure, you should close all running programs.
2) On the Windows Start menu, select "Run..."
3) Type the following and press Enter:
regsvr32 /u comdlg32.ocx
4) You should see a dialog like the this:
5) Press the "OK" button, then start the TD
6) You *may* see a dialog like this:
7) If so, press the "No" button
8 ) After the TD initializes, press the "Load" button and see if the file browser dialog opens
9) If so, yay!
10) If not, close the TD and repeat these steps. When you get to step 7, press the "Yes" button instead

Hello Corey,
I just do what you request.
And the first time on the 6 point, I have this message:
I've not install this cab file. And I run TD but unfortunatly, the same error.
I retry after that and Accept to install this file but unfortunatly the same error again.
Kind regards,
-
Hy Corey,
its not working, i try all so you say but i have the same promlem like Ang3IoP.
Nothing work
???

Hi Cory

After many hours of trying alot of things and several communications with Corey we got TD working again. The problem is it appears the final fix was to remove Vista from the computer then reloaded it with the disks that originally came with my computer no Idea why but it worked for us Corey might advise if this is the right thing for you to do. I might also add that my computer is brand new. One other thing when prompted to run the active X we choose not to do so, We also turned off automatic updates. Once again TD has operated like its suppose to with out one flaw.
-
At this point, I believe it to be an update from Microsoft that is causing this issue, but I haven't been able to identify it or even reproduce it. I've gotten all of the latest updates on Windows XP home, XP Pro, XP Media Center, and Server 2003, but none have yet had this issue.
Ang3loP: the dialog you saw to install "comdlg32.cab" is troubling because you should never see this dialog. This seems to indicate a change in the Windows/IE security model. If you do see this, you should definitely install it, as this is the control that allows the TD to access the system file dialogs. The point of this exercise was to remove the control and allow the TD to re-install it and see if this might fix the issue. Obviously it did not.
I assume that, if an update did cause the issue, that removing the update might return the TD to a working state. That might help narrow down which update is giving us trouble (again, if it is an update). If anyone's willing to try this...
- Open the Control Panel
- Open "Add or Remove Programs"
- Make sure "Change or Remove Programs" is selected on the left
- Check the box "Show updates" at the top
- Scroll down to "Windows Internet Explorer"
- The updates to Internet Explorer should be listed in the order that they were installed. Work backwards and remove the last update (take note of the update number - it should be of the format "KBnnnnnn", like KB958215). You may have to reboot afterwards. Then run the TD and see if the load/save dialogs work.
At some point in the future, Windows Update should automatically or prompt you to re-install any updates you remove, and if not you can always re-install them manually as long as you know the update number.
-
Corey,
I am having the same problem with my version of the TD.
I have tried your different methods to fix it and it still wont work.
Do you know the exact update no. that is causing the problem?
Also, are there any older versions of the TD available for download as they might work?
-
Hey guys, not sure if I can help, but here it goes. I downloaded the TD a week or so ago and everything was OK, but that was it, OK. What I mean is, I thought it should be preforming better. Then I went to save a tournament and it would not do it, the computer started acting crazy. It has been sometime since my computer has been cleaned up professionally, so I took it to the shop. My computer guy told me that internet explorer 7 is having some big issues and that is what was running on my computer. He told me that he recomended me to go back to 6, and when they fix 7 we can reload it. He is the expert, so I went with his advice. We did a few other things and my computer runs better now than it ever has. The TD runs perfect, I could'nt ask for better. I think it had everything to do with internet explorer 7, my issues have been fixed. I hope this helps. Scott

Hello Corey
normaly i like to use the TD on my Laptop, but now i think i trying the TD on my Desktop PC.
I Install it, Register It and Try it and I can hardly believe it. It Works.
All Buttons working, i use on my PCs WinXP not Vista.
No i Check which Updates i have on my Laptop and which on my Desktop.
I found this ONLY on my Laptop (sorry its German) Sicherheitsupdate für Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB933566)
i uninstall it and the TD is Work !!
Also, uninstall the Update with the Nummer KB933566 and its Work
-
djlakeland: This is exactly the kind of information I was hoping to get, thank you very much.
KB933566 does have a component that is very relevant to this problem, so there is a good chance this will yield some good information. The problem I see is that this update was released initially in November of 2007, which means to me there should have been a lot more people experiencing this TD issue a lot sooner than now. Honestly, I'm not sure what to make of that. I installed this update on one machine but still it does not cause the issue to occur for me. I'm working on installing it on other versions of Windows to see if I can replicate the problem...
mickeyk28: I think your first question has already been answered: no, I don't know what update might be causing the issue (which is kind of the point of this exercise). And unfortunately this issue will most likely affect ALL versions of the TD.
-
I'm not sure if this is helpful or not but I have TD loaded on a PC that is running XP and I'm have no issues with all of the latest Microsoft updates and a laptop that is running on Vista that worked until the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista (KB958215) was loaded on 12/11. Now there was like 10 other updates that day but I think this was the only one that IE specific.
-
For any of you experiencing this issue, did sounds in the TD stop playing, too? Go to the Events tab, right click any of the sounds and select "Play sound".
-
Corey,
Sounds are still working on my laptop.
-
Hmmm... well, that's a little disappointing, but doesn't necessarily mean anything.
I've made a change to the software that complies with one of the suspected Windows updates. I'm going to try to get it packaged up and uploaded to the site later today. I'm not holding on to a lot of hope for this fix, but if one of you experiencing this issue wouldn't mind downloading and testing it, I would appreciate it.
-
I've uploaded version 2.5.4, but have not yet made it public. This version contains ONLY a change in the way Active-X controls are instantiated - there are no other differences from version 2.5.3.
Someone who is experiencing this issue, please download and install this version. Confidence isn't too high, but I'm crossing my fingers. Thanks in advance.
Download here: http://www.thetournamentdirector.net/TournamentDirector254.exe (http://www.thetournamentdirector.net/TournamentDirector254.exe)
Edit: version 2.5.4 is no longer available.
-
Hi Corey
I downloaded and tried the new version 2.5.4, but unfortunately I still have the same problem as it still will not save. Wish I had better news to report.
Johnny
-
Thanks for trying it. Do sounds still work?
-
Something else to try (any version of the TD is fine):
In the Game Window, right-click on the clock and select "Edit Clock Properties". Change the HTML to:
<object classid="CLSID:6BF52A52-394A-11d3-B153-00C04F79FAA6"></object>
Press OK to close the dialog. You should see the clock change to an embedded Windows Media Player. There won't be a video or audio file open, and there's no way to open one, but you should be able to interact with the controls that are visible (volume control, for example). Does this work for you?
Next, right-click on the clock and again select "Edit Clock Properties". Change the HTML to:
<span onclick="CDControl.ShowOpen()"><object id="CDControl" classid="CLSID:F9043C85-F6F2-101A-A3C9-08002B2F49FB"></object>click</span>
Press OK to close the dialog. This time, you should see the word "click", and when you click (left-click), you should (hopefully) get a "load" file dialog. Does this work for you?
-
Hi Corey,
I have just tried changing the html in the edit clock settings and after the final stage I got an error window and it contained this information:

Hi Corey...... me again :)
Right after the changing the html plan did not work for me I tried uninstalling IE 7 updates!
Running TD Version 2.5.3 btw
First to go was KB960714 installed 19/12/2008 and then rebooted and tried TD and still had same problem :(
Next to go was KB958215 installed 11/12/2008, rebooted then tried TD and it works like it should. I have turned off automatic updates (as already it wanted to reinstall the updates) and I have rebooted a couple more times and each time tried TD and all seems fine :D
I am running Window's XP Pro SP3
I hope this also helps ?
Cheers
Robb

I downloaded and installed 2.5.4 and I'm still experiencing the same issues and sounds still worked.
-
Someone who is still experiencing this issue and has used the "regedit" tool before, please do the following:
- Start regedit (on the Windows Start menu, select Run..., then enter "regedit" and press Enter)
- Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer"
- Right click on the "Internet Explorer" key and select "Export"
- Enter a filename and press the Save button
- Email the exported file to support@thetournamentdirector.net (you *may* need to rename the file - some email programs and providers won't allow a ".reg" file to be sent or received; change the ".reg" extension to ".txt")
-
Hi Corey,
Am using Vista Home Premimum sp1.
Have tried using Robbs advice about uninstalling updates kb960714, and kb658215 and rebooting.
unfortunately this made no difference, still unable to save/load etc.
I do however have sounds.
hope this might help

Here's a potential fix for this issue. I've attached a "reg" file to this post. This is a Windows Registry file. Download the file (right-click on the file below and select "Save As..."), and save it to your Desktop.
Double-click the file. You should see a dialog asking if you want to import the information into the registry, like this:
Press the "Yes" button. If you are running Vista, you will most likely first be prompted with an "elevation" dialog, telling you that the system needs your permission in order to run the file. Agree to this.
Start up the TD and try to load/save. Hopefully, you'll get the file selection dialog this time.
Note: You must be a registered member of the forums to see attached files.
-
Hi Corey,
That seems to do the trick, can load/save etc, all seems to be good.
thanks
Simon
-
Very good to hear. Anyone else? Obviously this is a critical issue, and I want to get out a fix ASAP.
-
Hey Corey,
I have been having the same problems on my laptop with Vista. No Load/Save. I also had no sounds. After using the registry fix I now have ability to Load/Save but still have no sound. I get this message when starting TD 'There was an error accessing Windows Media Player. Sounds may not play. Tournament Director requires Windows Media Player 7 or greater.'
I have Windows Media Player 11. When I try to play a sound as you instructed in above post I get this error:
There was a problem: Name: Typeerror Number: 10-5007 Description: 'controls' is null or not an object Message: controls is null or not an object

Corey,
It looks like you found the fix with the "reg" file everything is back to normal.
Thanks!

Let me try this again
The registry import worked for me. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Corey's fix worked for me - on Vista with all the latest updates, I couldn't load the game I'd saved after downloading TD tonight. Many thanks!! ;D ;D 8)

Hi. I had the same problem. (Eee PC, Win XP Home Norwegian, IE7).
I removed the IE updates in this requence:
KB938127-v2 + reboot (same error)
KB960714 + reboot (same error)
KB956390 + reboot (IT WORKED!)

The fix worked for me too! Thanks! ;D ;D
-
So, Corey, for those of us who haven't done the latest update, what do you advise?
- wait to install update
- install update and use the posted fix
- wait until new version of TD comes out that includes the fix as part of the install(?)
-
Good question.
My advice is first, if you're not experiencing the issue, obviously there's no need to do anything.
As far as Windows Updates go, I would advise keeping up with them. It appears I've identified the TD issue, and the workaround works, so there's no good reason NOT to install Windows updates. If you experience the problem, use the "reg" file to fix it. This is a good *workaround* because it can easily be undone if necessary. It is not the solution to the problem.
I am still investigating the issue. I have a version 2.5.5 ready for some testing but I'm not quite convinced it is the proper fix, so I have not yet released it. And of course, the holidays are currently delaying that just a little bit. Stay tuned ...
-
Regardless of the update (2.5.5) Outstanding work everyone and to you Cory for the work you have done and the joy for us all! LOL
Thank you!
The reg fix solved the issue for me as well :)
-
nevermind..... got it now
-
Has this issue been resolved? I logged on here to show a co-worker and fellow TD user a background and I saw this. I'm holding a tournament in 3 weeks and haven't used TD since the last one I hosted in October. If it's still a problem, it's a BIG problem for me. (I fooled with TD right before Xmas to play some sounds for someone at the Events tab worked fine)
EDIT: I'm a nit and only read through the first page of this thread. I'll go home and play with TD and report my findings ... I have a laptop with some preloaded version of Vista.
-
The .REG file fix (workaround) worked perfectly for me too.
Brand new laptop on Jan 1st 2009 running Windows XP SP3 and Internet Explorer 7. I did all Windows updates when I unpacked it and then installed TD.
I had the problem, read this whole thread, did the .REG fix ONLY and all is now well. I can load all my old saves from the old, broken laptop copied over and I can save new ones.
Thanks Corey, good work! :)
-
Just an update... I've incorporated a fix into the next version of the TD, but I've got a separate fix I'd like to include. I'm waiting for OSes to arrive so I can do a wide range of testing on both of the fixes.
-
Many thanks to everyone for helping out with this one. I've just released 2.5.5, and I believe the problem is fixed.
-
Corey.....just incase you dont know........microsoft have just realised there new operating system on a beta version....WINDOWS 7.........it uses internet explorer 8 beta.....and YOUR LASTEST VERSION 5.5 works great.......at least you know you have future proofed yourself ;D......
-
Thanks for the feedback. I'll be doing some Windows 7 testing soon.
-
i meant to add.....ive tested it for you on the windows 7 beta,32 bit and 64 bit...works spot on..no glitches....... 8)
-
I've had this problem on my [old, no, very old] laptop running 98. I've tried this .REG fix, but am getting the message "Cannot import. Specified file is not a registry script" *sniff* Was hoping this would resolve this, especially after it did everyone else :(
Thanks for help :)
Eleanor
P.S. My version of TD works fine on my Vista PC. Is it just not going to work in Win.98?
-
Please ignore my last post. I have a genius computer programmer friend who manually change the registry entry from this .REG update, and all is now well (apart from still having a very VERY old and slow laptop)...
Hopefully, I can design a nice looking tournament on my main PC and now load it into the laptop without problems, and take it to the pub!
Many thanks anyway ;)
-
I'm surprised the TD is working on Win98, to be honest. What version of the TD are you using?
-
Thanks for replying anyway Corey, that's really nice :D
I'm running 2.3.6 Can't update further or the REALLY old laptop couldn't handle it. It runs VERY slow, but I only need the basics. The clock updates every 5/6 seconds which isn't ideal, but I'm hoping that mu programmer friend can get it up to speed...unlikely I'm guessing!
Didn't really want to buy another laptop, but it's looking that way...
Thanks again though.
Elly x

Corey
I have dowm loaded the latest version, followed the instructions to get my files back.
All is OK but it seems to leave the latest out, I have 2 players missing from my data base
and m2 2 latest games missing, well not missing, they are not in the file TD is looking in.
If I go to the folders in the local directory one they are there, might be something to do with dates, not sure.
I seem to have got a bit confused, which folder should TD be looking in.
The I can copy and paste the missing folders in to the right folder.

Depends. Where the TD *was* looking, or where it is *now* looking? And where the TD *was* looking also depends. Which is another reason why moving this to a known, "approved" location makes sense.
The player database is stored in multiple files, but the index is in only 1 file. So, if you've got the index file (td.db), then it should show all of the players in your database. If you don't, then it shouldn't show any players in your database. I can't see how it would get all players except for 2.
As for tournament files, if you know where the "missing 2" files are, copy them to the folder "My Documents\The Tournament Director 2\Data\saves".
For the missing players, you can load a tournament with those players and press the "Add All to DB" button on the Players tab. This will add them back to your database with the proper internal ID. If you had additional information on these players (like address, phone, email, etc), you'll probably have re-enter that info.
Are you attempting to run Stats and not seeing what you expect? If so, you'll probably have to change the "Tournament File Locations" on the Preferences tab. This needs a better solution, because it defaults to the "saves" folder in the install location, which is incorrect. I'm thinking I'm going to do some updates to Filters to allow them to include file paths, instead of having a simple preference on the Preferences tab, so I'll fix this up with that addition.
-
Cheers Corey.
The 2 players that are missing for what ever reason are greyed out in the tourney they played in (the latest tourny that was missing).
A bit confusing but all sorted now.
Are you any nearer getting the updates to do everything for us, I mean in the file ways.

Well. it appears to be back..
Running Win 7 Ultimate x64
TD 2.5.11
I get the issue with comdlg32.cab and the load/save isnt working ;(
Edit: Digging deeper, it looks like the comdlg32.ocx that is packaged does not want to work on a 64 bit machine
Edit 2:Fiound solution..
Conditions: Running 64 bit Windows 7, my problem will not exist on windows 7 32 bit.
ComClt32.ocx does not come normally installed on win7 64.
Package for TD 2.5.11 does not propery install it for 64 bin OSes
Download from here: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/comdlg32.htm
With elevated permissions extract comdlg32.ocx to c:\windows\SysWow64
again with elevated permissions run regsvr32 c:\windows\SysWOW64\Comdlg32.ocx
You should be good to go
-
That's weird. I've been using the TD on Win 7 64-bit for at least 6 months now, no problems at all. You didn't happen to *start* with an earlier version of the TD, did you? There was at least one version of the TD where the software did not request to run with elevated privileges, which could instigate this issue. I can't think of any other reason off the top of my head as to why this would be a problem.
-
v2.5.11 is running smoothly on my vista laptop, but after installing it onto my 64 bit windows 7 desktop, im getting a rather frequent warning notification, that looks like this...
it appears as soon as i start the program, when i switch tabs, anything. Additionally, its not letting me load anything, including the backup file from my laptop. I've tried the few tips listed in this thread with no luck. Any suggestions? Would v2.5.12 fix this? (if so, where can i get it?) Thanks!
-
Yes, 2.5.12 fixes this. Rather, works around it, since Microsoft broke it because their own web browser doesn't understand their own digital signature. You can download 2.5.12 from the download page (look for the link near the bottom of the page): http://www.thetournamentdirector.net/download.html
-
Works like a charm, THANKS!
