Help Me / Re: Tournament Points recommendations
« on: September 17, 2007, 01:21:51 PM »
I would post our formula for you but I am embarrased to say that my TD laptop had a disk drive meltdown and I did not have the files backed up. I need to puzzle a bit and re-create my formula on my new laptop. I have got everything re-established on my new laptop except my screen layout tweaking and the points formulas. Not sure when I will get to the formula again, (need to wrap my head around it once more), but when I do I will share it here.

One of our players set up an Access DB that tracks all of our stats. We use it to create various reports that get turned into PDF docs and emailed out to our members each week. Still in the process of setting up our website.

The bonus points do go into the player's total rankings for the league.

Side pots as follows:
(1) Nightly Bounty Prize.
(2) Gunslinger Rollover Pot that pays out anytime it reaches $100.
(3) Best Hand Rollover Pot that pays out anytime it reaches $75.
(4) Bad Beat Pot.

Hey there:
Not sure if this will help or not, but you may find our format relevant to what you are setting up.

I run a league from January to October every year. I commit to hosting 20 games minimum during the season with a possibility of squeezing in a few more. We run two tables that seat 8 people each. There are currently 45 players with registered games in the league.

Players get to use their BEST 7 out of the FIRST 10 games they play. Each player only needs to play 7 games for a shot at the final table.

Each game they play costs $30. ($20 to the nightly pot, $5 to various side pots that pay out during the season, $5 to the final table game at the end of the season.

Points are awarded as follows:
Each player receives 10 points per player that goes out befor them on a regular series game. Come in 15th, get 10 points, come in 10th and get 60 points.
The top four players, the ones in teh money for the night) get a factor applied to their points to represent the prestige of making it to the top four and being in the money. (1st=1.5, 2nd=1.35, 3rd=1.15, 4th=1.05).

In addition to the ranking points, players receive 2 bonus points every time they take out a player. These points continue to accumulate even after a player has played his first 10 games. This encourages players to attend games after they have got their required games in.

We are nearing the end of the season for our 2007 series and the jockeying for the final table is awesome. Hopefully this can give you some ideas for your league.

Good luck and have fun...

Great job on the Sound files. Adds a touch of class and professionalism to the event. I think I will borrow the idea for table balancing, thank you.

Suggestions / Re: What's Missing
« on: June 07, 2007, 11:59:53 PM »
I agree that this is a real life management issue and not a software issue. I only run two table at my house and they are a max of 8 players each. I send out a game notice via email at least three days before a game and the 16 seats go to the first sixteen respondents. It works very well and if we have a no show, the players chips get blinded out and that player realizes they have to make good for the $30 entry. I have yet to be stiffed and all of our games start on time. Most players do not like the idea of their chips being blinded in so attendance is generally prompt.

A good league or house rule can really set the stage to allow for prompt starts.

Help Me / Re: Stats Question for our Poker Series
« on: April 30, 2007, 12:07:07 PM »
Thanks Corey.

Quite a speedy response. Thanks. I figured this might be a left field request, I am glad it is on a list to look at in the future. I imagine your head must spin with all of the ways various people set up their games, points structures, leagues, and other parameters. Who would have thought there would be this much variation in how people run and manage their poker events? :D

Help Me / Stats Question for our Poker Series
« on: April 30, 2007, 11:13:07 AM »
Hello everyone:

I am not sure if what I am looking for can be accomplished in TD, but it is worth asking. There are many clever minds in the group...

We run a Poker Series from January to October. In November the top eight ranked players meet at a final table for the big prize. I commit to hosting a minimum of 20 games throughout the series and each night consists of two table with 8 players each. The sixteen seats are sold on a first come first serve basis. Some players get many games in and some only get a few in.

The players Series Points are based on the BEST seven games out of the player's FIRST ten games played. This structure was in place before we started to use the tracking features in TD. Now that we have started to uncover the benefits and features of TD we are curious to ffind out if the stats can reflect this in any way.

Any help or guidance on how to accomplish this in TD would be appreciated...

Beta Testing / Re: Version 2.3 Beta 1
« on: April 23, 2007, 08:54:52 AM »
Thanks Corey.

We have used the software for quite awhile now but were never using the Stats. I have our points formula working perfectly now so we decided to re-do the tournaments in TD for the 2007 to test out the version. So far, everything looks good and the stats reporting is great, (should have done this a long time ago).

Keep up the great work and awesome support.

Help Me / Re: Non-League players playing in League games
« on: March 26, 2007, 03:16:10 PM »
I would like to chime in here to support what macacan is saying. Last year when this come up, the points for the non-league players vanished into the nether. It did not make sense to reward someone by virtue they came in behind a non-league player. When you start doing that you walk on a slippery slope. Although unlikely, it is possible for 7 non-league players to place in the top 7 spots and the last place 8th position to get awarded points for top spot as the only league player. I know that example was a bit silly but it illustrates the inequity in a structure like that.

As a side note, every player that plays at my house during a 2007 PFH Series game (January - October) is a league member by virtue they played in a league game. Whether they want me to or not, I track their points and their standings. It matters not whether they ever come back to play, their stats are captured and added to whenever they return...

Great thread idea...

We are into our second season and I prepare all of the reports and email them to our series members on a weekly basis as a PDF. Where the game is at my house, we have kept it closed and not published on the web but we are thinking about web reporting right now. One of our members is doing a database for all of the reporting and he is pretty much done the development. After seeing these great sites, (Especially JohnnyRockets), we may well be inspired to take the web approach.

Thanks all...

Beta Testing / Re: Next version (post 2.2.2) status
« on: February 25, 2007, 11:31:53 AM »
Awesome. Just awesome. In this age of shoddy software it is a pleasure to run a highly functional program. We have been using TD for all of our events for almost 2 years now, best software I ever registered. Thanks for the continued updates...

PS. Skip the tea & coffee feature, if it could fetch me a beer between rounds that would be brilliant.

General Discussion / Re: What color chips should I use?
« on: February 15, 2007, 12:36:52 PM »
It kind of depends on how you want your rounds to play out and if you like a lot of chips in play. Now in our second season, we have settled on the following chip structure. We typically play two tables of 8 players each. We do a chip up when the tables merge to get rid of the whites & reds. It is also important to note the level of our blinds. We play 3 20 minute rounds, then break, 3 more 20 minute rounds, a break, and a final set of 3 more 20 minute rounds. Ocassionally we go over that but are finished most nights within the 9 levels of play. The first three rounds are "Dinner & A Movie" (low blinds). The second set of blinds are "Foreplay" (mid blinds and the game gets a bit edgy. The third set of rounds is "Some is getting screwed" :) and they are more agressive.

Chips used.
15 White = $10 each...$150.00
14 Red = $25 each......$350.00
10 Blue = $50 each......$500.00
5 Green = $100 each...$500.00
1 Black = $500 each.....$500.00

Total starting value = $2000.00

Hope that helps,
Bix

Help Me / Re: Tournament Point Suggestions
« on: February 13, 2007, 06:00:27 PM »
what is a gunslinger pot (highest number of hits?)

How do you define your "bad beats" and how do you distribute the "best hand" pot?  for "best hand" do you just give it to the person who had the best hand of the night after the $75 is met?
Gunslinger is the most take outs up to the point the pot pays, then everybody has their G/S count reset to zero.

A bad beat is any hand that is full house or better and is beat by another hand.

We keep a Best Hand registry, where players can register the best hand if it beats the current best hand in the registry. Currently, in our series, one player has a straight flush. 6S-7S-8S-9S-10S. When the limit is tripped, the pot pasy out to teh best hand to date and the registry gets reset.

Hope that makes sense...

Help Me / Re: Tournament Point Suggestions
« on: February 13, 2007, 04:02:49 PM »
Wow. Lots of great discussion here. We are into game #5 of our 2007 Series. This is our second season. The first one went very well and I have had to cap the number of people I invite to this year. I will share what we are doing in case it is of use to anyone setting up a series.

We play with two tables. Minimum # of players is 6 and Maximum is 16 for official PFH Series Games.

Points formula is quite simple. Each player receives 10 points for every player that busts out before them. The top four players (Cash earners) get their points factored as follows:

1st place is multiplied by 1.50
2nd place is multiplied by 1.35
3rd place is multiplied by 1.15
4th place is multiplied by 1.05

We run the series from January to October and the top eight points earners will meet at the final table.

I commit to hosting a minimum of 20 games and a maximum of 40 during the season, (life happens).

Points are based off of the best 7 of the first 10 games played.

Each player receives 2 points for every elimination, (they all liked the idea of a take out bonus). This is in place for the entire series, even after your first 10 games are done.

We have 52 on the invite list, (how is that for coincidence?). Many players play more than the 10 games needed for points calculations. In October, there is a satellite seat game. The 8 seats at this game go to the players with the most games played that currently have not made it to the final table. The top 2 from this game get to join the chosen 8 for a final table game of TEN players.

Every player contributes $5 each game to the final pot.

In addition to the nightly payouts for the top four positions, we have a nightly bounty pot and three accumulating pots.
(1) Bad Beat Pot....  Pays out when it occurs.
(2) Gunslinger Pot... Pays out when the pot trips over the $100 limit.
(3) Best Hand Pot... Pays out when the pot trips over the $75 limit.

Currently we are using TD to run the tournament but we track all of the points rankings, financial rankings, and pots in Excel. TD is a great program, but we felt Excel would meet our Unique needs better.

Anyways,
Great to hear what everyone is doing with TD and their Poker Series...

Cheers,
Bix
