If you want to try yourself, try Gimp2. I have made a couple of basic logos. and they weren't too bad. worth trying.
Another one is paint.net

There are plenty of examples of" how to do" on YouTube

I use GIMP for all my graphics. However, I do have a few friends that are great with a pencil and paintbrush. They draw, I scan (then alter if I have to)
