What color chips should I use?
« on: January 07, 2007, 10:17:15 PM »
I have 3 300 standard chips sets + - roughly 260 of red, green, blue, black plus approx 400 in white. My tournament stands now at 14 players (two tables). What is good buy-in chip count per player and color break down? Buy in will be either $20 or $25 depending if we do bounties.

It would depend on how much you want to start with. I run a $20 game w/ 16 players and I start them with 3500 in chips, 8 white@ $25 - 8 red@ $50 - 4 green@ $100 - 3 blue@ $500 and 1 black @ $1000

go to homepokertourney web site (one of TD links) and use one of their well established structures/chip counts.

For your chip set and a tourney of 10-20 people I would use their chip distribution #2 (15 red-$5, 13 green-$25, 6 black-$100) for a $T1000 tourney with their tourney schedule.  This way you are using standard casino chip color/denominations and a well established structure.

This kind of reminded me when I looked at the chips tab in TD, so I looked again and you can pre-set chips to the players, and set up chipsets. I wonder if there is some kind of formula the program can use to figure out an efficient way to distribute chips depending on how many you have for a count and how much is the intial buy-in and to warn if reserve chips will or will not cover all possible rebuys and add-on for players. Sounds like it could be a good one for the suggestion box, no?

Phaze,

See section 15.5 & 15.6 of the help section for TD.

If that doesn't do it for ya, then check out the links section which would take you to homepokertourney.com and you can find these chip utility spreadsheets:

http://www.homepokertourney.com/chips_needed.htm

and also

http://www.homepokertourney.com/poker-utilities.htm

There are so many possible tourney structures, chip allocations, and rebuy/add-on possibilities that to find "most efficient chip distribution" might be an exercise in futility.  But, what the program does will fit most needs already.

I guess the one thing it does not do, is anticipate what chips you are going to use for a rebuy or add on.  That is, while you may use a number of low denomination chips for a buy-in, you probably won't use the same denominations for a rebuy (maybe you will have $5, $25, $100, $500 chips for buy-in, but for the rebuy or add-on you will only use $100 and $500 chips - the TD chip calculator doesn't really calculate this out for you - it assumes each buy-in or rebuy will be for the same per-player set of chips).

I have my rebuys set so they don't get a full buy-in amount of chips, so this also can't be figured into TDs chip calculator, but it is pretty easy work to determine what I need.

I made up a simple document file cheat sheet that tells me how many chips I need for a given number of buy-ins (It also helps me set up my "chip-up" chip trays, so I have the correct number of chips to color up small denomination chips when they aren't needed).  I have attached that, not that it would do you any good since you will no doubt use a different structure and chip set than I do, but just to see one option.

I see alot of sites suggesting chip counts and my group didn't like any of them.
We like to have a mess of chips to play with.  Makes ya feel rich.  lol.

we use:
20 white @ $5
20 Red @ 10
10 Green @ 25
10 Blue @ 50
10 Black @ 100

Just keep in mind you need enough green, blue and black chips left over to buy out the red and whites when you chip up.

For the first hour with run limit with starting blinds of 5-10 and raise them every 20 mins.
them we do a chip up to get rid of the reds and whites.
Another hour of limit and its time to get ugly.  lol.
First person out after about 2 hours, and games last 3.5 - 4.5 hours.  4 hours being the norm.

Round 1 20m Limit Texas Hold 'Em $5 $10 $10 $20 $0 0:00
Round 2 20m Limit Texas Hold 'Em $10 $20 $20 $40 $0 0:20
Round 3 20m Limit Texas Hold 'Em $15 $30 $30 $60 $0 0:40
Round 4 20m Limit Texas Hold 'Em $20 $40 $40 $80 $0 1:00
Break 1 15m        1:20 chip up
Round 5 20m Limit Texas Hold 'Em $25 $50 $50 $100 $0 1:35
Round 6 20m Limit Texas Hold 'Em $50 $100 $100 $200 $0 1:55
Round 7 20m Limit Texas Hold 'Em $75 $150 $150 $300 $0 2:15
Break 2 15m        2:35
Round 8 20m No Limit Texas Hold 'Em $100 $200 $200 $400 $0 2:50
Round 9 20m No Limit Texas Hold 'Em $150 $300 $300 $600 $0 3:10
Round 10 20m No Limit Texas Hold 'Em $200 $400 $400 $800 $0 3:30

Round 13 20m No Limit Texas Hold 'Em $500 $1,000 $1,000 $2,000 $0 4:45
Break 4 15m        5:05

It kind of depends on how you want your rounds to play out and if you like a lot of chips in play. Now in our second season, we have settled on the following chip structure. We typically play two tables of 8 players each. We do a chip up when the tables merge to get rid of the whites & reds. It is also important to note the level of our blinds. We play 3 20 minute rounds, then break, 3 more 20 minute rounds, a break, and a final set of 3 more 20 minute rounds. Ocassionally we go over that but are finished most nights within the 9 levels of play. The first three rounds are "Dinner & A Movie" (low blinds). The second set of blinds are "Foreplay" (mid blinds and the game gets a bit edgy. The third set of rounds is "Some is getting screwed" :) and they are more agressive.

Chips used.
15 White = $10 each...$150.00
14 Red = $25 each......$350.00
10 Blue = $50 each......$500.00
5 Green = $100 each...$500.00
1 Black = $500 each.....$500.00

Total starting value = $2000.00

Hope that helps,
Bix

this is a totally different matter, BigSlick, then we were talking about. But to answer what you had in mind, the pictures that are displayed are stored in the image folder of thetournementdirecter 2 folder, where ever you have it stored on... normally that is C:\Program Files\The Tournament Director 2\images

these are all gif images and you can find your own images, or even scan your own chips and put them in the image file. Then in the tournament directer program, select the "chips" tab and load or make your own chipset and dedicate each chip value to the new image file that you want...

example: I found a $50 chip picute from google images and saved the graphic to image folder (C:\Program Files\The Tournament Director 2\images). I opened the tournament directer program and selected chips tab. I loaded my chipset template. I right clicked on my green chips. I found edit chip. I then selected the radial dial on image and clicked on browse. I found the chip image I wanted to use in C:\Program Files\The Tournament Director 2\images and clicked ok.... now on my layout, that picture image will be displayed during tournament play
