Title: Tournament Templates as folders
Post by: herb on June 05, 2008, 08:56:17 AM
Hello there,

I'm working as floorman in a small cardroom, and we have all our tournaments saved as .tdt files. I simply copy-protected these files, so the other people working with TTD can't overwrite them, and so far this works quite well.

When we're starting the daily tournament, we load the template, save it with the current date as filename, but there is one problem with this: whenever i change the layout, i have to open up all our Template-files, load the new layout-template (or rounds-template, or whatever we changed) and save it again. So here's my ideas on how this could be done better:

This way, whenever you change the layout, or the rules, or anything, you just have to copy the new template-files into all of the Template-folders, or change the standard-template file for those things that are the same for all tournaments, and you're done, the're automatically loaded)
I think this would make TDT even easier to work with, especially for those who administrate the templates and do the layouts.

So what do you think of this idea??

I had to read this a few times to understand what you were suggesting ..... and frankly, I'm still not sure I completely get it.  It sounds like you use a saved tournament file as a "template" for each tournament.  But you also save each of the various pieces of a tournament in specific template files: a rounds template, a prizes template, a layout, etc.

So, you run several different types of tournaments, so you have several tournament "templates" saved.  The problem comes when you modify the layout, and when you do you must load each tournament template, then load the new layout, then re-save the tournament template.  Right?

So, instead of doing this you would rather physically move or copy the various template files into a folder, press a new "New Tournament from Template" button, which would instruct the TD to load the tournament template and then in turn load each of the template files (for rounds, layout, etc) that are also in that same folder.  Then you could re-save the tournament template.

Is that right?

It sounds to me like basically the same thing in a different way.  Same number of steps, just different steps.  Or am I way off the mark?

Hello, sorry for my hit and run post, i completely forgot about it.

Sorry for being a little bit confusing, it's the language barrier, it's kinda hard for me to explain those things. But I have a way better Idea anyway: Instead of organizing the whole thing in folders it would be better to have a "from file" option in the tabs (like in the rules - tab).

So for example if you go to the "Layout" - tab there could be a checkbox "From template-file" and if you check it, you're asked for the file's location. Now every time you load that saved tournament, the layout is loaded from the template-file. And if you change the layout-template, the layout is automatically updated for all the saved tournaments if you load them.

This way one could update the layout for all the saved files in just one step. (Which is great if you find a typo in your layout or just want to update it)

Sorry again for not responding that long, and thank you for your quick response, herb
