Maximum no. for a poker table?
« on: December 11, 2006, 03:54:06 PM »
Just wondered what you guys thought on what the maximum number of players at a table should be? I've seen 11 banded about on the internet, but thought I'd ask whether anyone's played at a table with more than that.

I have played with 12 before - no problems (other than mechanical).  I think you could go higher if it wasn't such a pain to manage to chips and cards.

I only allow 11 at my 8 foot oval table (10 and dealer or 11 players).

For home games, 9 is optimal because most of your dealers or player-dealers are not going to be as quick dealing to 11 (angle and distance) but the benefits are obvious (less worry about 3 tables of 7 getting blinded away).

We run between 9 and 10 max, depending on the number of players that are starting.  If we are nearing the end of a round and we still have 11, I will sometimes force the final table to 11.

I have played in casino tournaments where we sat 12 to a table.  It works but you are not comfortable, besides, position gets a little crazy.

It's a home game and players are generally expecting a more relaxed atmosphere.  Cramming too many to a table can make the early rounds less enjoyable, since hardly anyone goes out.

During both Home games and charity events on our area, we tend to keep the table to Dealer plus 7 players.  This is mostly because until October of last year, the Michigan Charitable Gaming Division only allowed 7 players.  We got used to this set-up and continue to run our home games the same.

90% of our games are 1 table, we try and keep it max 10, sometimes we let it go to 11 or 12.
This makes it very hard, players seem not to concentrate as much and play slows down a lot.
We have made it now that we never have more than 10.

The only concern i have in table size is the card odds.  If you have 10 players you have 2 cards each, plus the table cards and burn cards = 20 + 5 + 3 or 28 cards.  Thats just over have the deck.  Each player you add after that will make it more and more likely that any given card needed for a straight or flush etc will be out.  Not many players fold a ace so if a flush is out and you don't have it, someone will.  With 10 players or less, there is about a 50% or better chance that its still in the deck.  If i had to pick from having 2 tables of 7 or one of 14 i would go with 2 tables.  Then when you have second or third  nuts, then its more likely you can get away with winning with it.  I think its more fun and less frustrating.
