For home games, 9 is optimal because most of your dealers or player-dealers are not going to be as quick dealing to 11 (angle and distance) but the benefits are obvious (less worry about 3 tables of 7 getting blinded away).
We run between 9 and 10 max, depending on the number of players that are starting. If we are nearing the end of a round and we still have 11, I will sometimes force the final table to 11.
I have played in casino tournaments where we sat 12 to a table. It works but you are not comfortable, besides, position gets a little crazy.
It's a home game and players are generally expecting a more relaxed atmosphere. Cramming too many to a table can make the early rounds less enjoyable, since hardly anyone goes out.
