Title: 3 bet, 4 bet
Post by: macacan on September 06, 2010, 01:28:20 PM
I know its nothing to do with TD, but I would like to know the answer

3 bet and 4 bet are used in limit poker, I understand that but it is used in no limit.

So if the term 3 bet and 4 bet are used in no limit what exactly does it mean ?

 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

lol,

This is something that little people actually understand,

say for example blinds are 100/200 a 3 bet on the BB would be 600 total,

now for example blinds are 100/200, someone opens for 500 total (a raise of 300 and a 2.5 bet) a 3 bet in this situation would be 3 x the raise portion of the previous raise so 3x300+200=1,100 total.  A lot of people think a 3 bet or a 4 bet are just 3x/4x the total bet being faced, so in the example above a lot of people think a 3 bet on the 500 total is 1,500.

A 3 bet is made on the previous bet or raise (not total where multiple action has occurred) (the same way a raise must the size of the previous bet or raise (eg 100/200 raise to 500, next raise can be a minimum of 300 more to 800 total)

Hope this helps.

interesting Stu, but 95% of players say this.

Yes, the two above answers are correct.

The description, I believe, comes from Limit Poker where they is usually a cap on the number of raising bets per round. The standard cap is a bet and 3 raises.

So...BB = 1 bet
1st raise = 2 bet
2nd raise = 3 bet
3rd raise = 4 bet = Cap. From here you can only call.

NLHE seems to interpret this as...3bet = a re-raise and 4bet as re-re-raise.

I don't know much about limit, as it's a bit hazy for me, usually the cap is 3 raises in a single betting round though in FL games.

I've never heard of the terminology 3 bet and 4 bet in Limit games, so can only comment on PL and NL betting, interesting though about the FL description, will have to investigate!

stu - limit has the same (usual) 3 raise cap as FL does. PL usually (from my own personal online experiences) does not have a 4bet limit.

yeh, what i'm trying to understand here is where you would describe (in a Fixed Limit or Limit) game 3 bet or 4 bet.  Naturally there is a maximum usually of a bet and three raises on each street (is using RROP etc) but to describe that a 3 bet and 4 bet seems a little odd.

in Pot and No Limit games to 3 or 4 bet means to raise the raise portion being faced by the player as I described above, I have posted it up on the TDA forum for clarification as there are a lot of top limit/FL TD's on there that are far more knowledgeable than me on those types of games.  PL and NL are my domain!

I will naturally report back the findings in due course!
