Help Me / Re: Layout Issue in Vista
« on: February 17, 2008, 10:16:02 AM »
1) When I load a tourney file, it does have the layout that I want in it.  So, I practice by buying in all of the players and then going to the tourney screen where its flashing at me that we are ready.  First, the screen is not auto-sized, so I fix this.  Then, I start the clock but it doesn't go anywhere.

2)Now that you mention it, I do remember seeing a lock in the upper corner.  I have never changed that setting, so it seems odd that it would be there now, esp. having used this layout all last year.  Maybe just a coincidence with upgrading to Vista.

So, here's my follow up.  We had the tourney last night, completed it, saved it.  Went to load it this morning and use it as a template for next month's tourney...wouldn't you know, everything works that way it should.  So, I don't know what happened, because I never turned off the screen lock.  You mentioned that it unlocks the screen when I load the layout.  So, maybe it was getting saved locked and when I reset the tourney, it reset the lock?

All in all, thanks again for the help.

Help Me / Layout Issue in Vista
« on: February 16, 2008, 09:34:40 AM »
I have tried searching for this but may have an isolated issue.  Sorry if there is an answer already posted.

I have used this software for 3 years and only recently upgraded to Vista.  Since then, I haven't had any of the bugs people have mentioned except for this one.

Whenever I load a tourney file, it never uses the layout I saved with it.  I will setup a new tourney a couple of days in advance and use an old tourney file as a template.  When I buy in and seat everyone, I have to auto-size the screen, even though I had done that when I saved the tourney file the first time.  Then, when the tourney is going, it will not go to the Blinds screen, it stays on the pre-tourney screen.  To get it to go to the Blinds screeen, I have to go to the layout tab, load the layout and then go back to the tourney screen.  This corrects it.

I have tried to do all of this prior to my players arriving but when I reset the tourney or close TD, it goes back to my previously mentioned issue.

Sorry if this is a noob question, but any help would be appreciated.

General Discussion / Re: TD vs another software

If there is any doubt from anyone on whether or not they should get this software, then do this...Go to a casino or card room and enter one of their tourneys.   You will know whether or not they are using Corey's software because the one's that do, show so much more information (okay this may not be true but it has been my experience;)

My goal, when first starting my own league, was to give my players a professional experience.  This meant quality poker chips, real tables and a professional tournament clock displayed on a big screen.  I poured over the internet for months trying to accomplish this.  Other software has "try before you buy", but usually it is very basic or dumbed down.  Corey gives you the full thing.  I also d/l before v.2 and before I could send him any money as a thank you for creating such a great product, he came out with v.2 and well, I think it took me all of 10 seconds before I was reaching for my credit card.

People that have come to my games always ask me what software I am running and are blown away by the features.  When I tell them how much I paid for it, they are amazed.

If you run any sort of league, multi-event tournaments, this is the software you need and will come to not be able to play without.

Hey, I'm back.

Sorry, hope no one thought I was ignoring them.  I just haven't checked here in a long time.  My league kind of went sour last year and I had very little players.  I have now joined with another league (and convinced them to use your software Corey - no commission necessary, lol!) so player attendance will probably double.

After I got frustrated with the Hollywood Poker layout, I modified an existing layout I found and using someone's graphic for a background, I came to really like it.  I do not want to take credit for it, but I will export it tonight for you all in case you are interested.  Having seen that someone attempted the layout gives me new hope.

Thanks all!

Help Me / Re: Tournament Point Suggestions

I agree with the poster earlier that said there is not one correct formula because we would all use it. I'm just saying that after two seasons and going into my third in February, everyone keeps coming back week after week and no complaints from no one about the point structure. This makes me very happy...

I agree as well.  As long as every keeps coming back for every tournament, then you must be doing something right.  Who knows?  After this year, I will probably change the point structure yet again.

General Discussion / Re: Rebuy's
« on: January 04, 2007, 10:49:33 AM »
During our first season, there was a very strong sentiment against NO Rebuys.  Since we only play once/month, it was pretty harsh if someone caught a bad beat in the first round and either went home or had to sit around and watch while their "ride" continued to play.

For our second season we added 1 Rebuy and Add-ons.  At first players were concerned that it would be an all-in fest.  But when they saw how much the Pot increased, they put their concerns aside.  Play really didn't change all that much.  So much so that most of the players have asked for unlimited Rebuys for the first hour.  We do full rebuys (you have to Buy-In again).  So popping for more than 2 of these can be quite costly.  Most people won't.

Rebuys and Add-ons are a GREAT way to get more money in your pot without rasising the buy-in (which is the only other way to get more money in the pot besides getting more players).  I have found that most players don't mind spending a lot if it is in segments (so much before the tourney, so much during and so much at the break).

This year we also added bounty chips.  Just another way for players to win some money (plus it is a extra slice for the Championship Game contribution).

Actually, I just modified the default layout.  It is pretty difficult to get the areas to match the Hollywood Poker layout.  I will probably keep trying.

I hear what you are saying but after 2 years of TDing my own league, I have seen people get into the upper ranks by sitting and waiting, not risk taking.  They are being rewarded because they aren't calling the big bets.  True, anyone can get hits, but not everyone risks their stack to call an all-in.  What if someone maintains their stack through the entire game while another player takes everyone out.  Then the player that takes everyone out is unlucky (most time luck is all that matters between 1st and 2nd) and loses to the safe player.  Has the safe player earned their 1st place?  Yes, but if they complain because 2nd got more points then they did, then they should start playing some poker and taking risks.

Where do you host your poker tourney?  I am always looking for new players but rely on word-of-mouth or my own recruiting because, since it is at my house, I don't want strangers coming to my game.

How has your luck been with having strangers at your game?

General Discussion / Re: Maximum no. for a poker table?
« on: December 11, 2006, 06:54:12 PM »
For home games, 9 is optimal because most of your dealers or player-dealers are not going to be as quick dealing to 11 (angle and distance) but the benefits are obvious (less worry about 3 tables of 7 getting blinded away).

We run between 9 and 10 max, depending on the number of players that are starting.  If we are nearing the end of a round and we still have 11, I will sometimes force the final table to 11.

I have played in casino tournaments where we sat 12 to a table.  It works but you are not comfortable, besides, position gets a little crazy.

It's a home game and players are generally expecting a more relaxed atmosphere.  Cramming too many to a table can make the early rounds less enjoyable, since hardly anyone goes out.

Help Me / Re: Bounty question

You should check out this thread...

http://thetournamentdirector.net/forums/index.php?topic=239.0

There was a lengthy discussion on who to give hits to.  IMHO, I believe that the bounty should go to the first hitman and here's why:  should you penalize the first hitman simply because the player they knocked out wants to rebuy? A Rebuy is another player, plain and simple.

In our tourney, we put bounties on our Points Leader.  If someone knocks them out and the Points Leader rebuys, the bounty goes to the player that first knocked them out.

If I am not mistaken, I believe TD is going to award the bounty to the first Hitman.  You will probably have to manually award the bounty if you want to make it the last hitman.

Just my 2 cents.

Could you share the html code for the hitmen on the left

<u>Hit Leaders</u><br><hitleaders orient="vertical" max="3" showAll="false" showCounts="true" sortBy="count">

It's a token, all you have to do is insert it.

Next year starts our 3rd year and once again I am changing the points system.  It is a work in progress.  You have to figure out how to come up with a point structure that is fair, keeps players coming back and ultimately leads to mild competition.

The system we are adopting next year is as follows:

1 point for each person you beat (the bigger the tourney, the harder it is to win)
1 point for each person you knock out (why not reward the players that are doing all the work)
1 point for making it to the Final 9 (gives some significance to being at a "Final Table")
1/2 way through the season we start offering a bounty on the STD points leader (5% of their STD points - works out to between 2 and 5 points)

I am no longer giving extra points for coming in the money because it's a long season and you're already getting rewarded with money.  The Top 8 Point leaders go to the Final Table Championship (freeroll), everyone else plays a freeroll for the 9th spot.  We count your Top 8 out of 10 tourneys.  The starting chip stacks for the Championship game are graduated, giving an incentive to end the year higher in rank (e.g., 1st starts with twice as many chips as the 9th spot)

General Discussion / Re: Trophy Ideas
« on: November 29, 2006, 01:39:24 PM »
just got this for this year's champion.  It's not cheap but definitely worth it, esp. since you can use it as a marker.  It came in better looking than I expected; the picture does not do it justice.

http://www.pokerguard.com/custom-any-pocket-cards-p-39.html

$45 shipped.  I just took the money out of the 1st place prize for the Championship game.

It's pure Silver, so it's not only a great trophy/card marker, but it is actually worth something.

Well, the rooms aren't so far away that they can't hear the clock beeping.  So sound has never been an issue, but it is good thing to think about.
