Prize breakdown problem I ran into the other night.
« on: March 07, 2006, 06:34:32 AM »
I used the new version for the first time in a live environment.  Things worked out very nicely.  There was one little problem that I ran into.   The suggestion for the payout gave us 6 places for 28 players.  That was fine with me, but the person that was the original host of the home tourney wanted to add a 7th place during the event.  I sort of disagreed for the reason that we used the previous version in the past 3 events and used the suggested payout structure.  No real biggie until I added the 7th place as a fix number while adjusting the percentage on 1st and 2nd.  This skewed the entire pay structure and did not give the correct amount.

I ended up just using my personal excel sheet that I have built over the past 2.5 years while running various poker tourneys.

Did anyone else experience this problem.

Love the new features of the database and cleaner look.

This isn't exactly specific.  Can you give any more details?

I think I know what happened...

The percentage prizes are not for the total pot.  They are for the total pot - any fixed amount prizes.  When you added the fixed prize, you reduced the dollar amount of all of the percentage prizes.  When you reduced the percentages on the first and second place price, you messed it up even more.  There are a couple of easy ways to add a prize in your scenario...

1.  Just add a fixed amount prize.  All of the dollar amounts on your percentage prizes will adjust accordingly.
2.  If you know how many percentage points you are removing from the 1st and 2nd place prizes, just create a 7th place price with the percentage that you are removing.  Just make sure that all of the percentages add up to 100%.
3.  If you know how much you want your prizes to be, just have them all be fixed amount prizes.

I ended up doing that but If I wanted to adjust the prize pool during a tourney it does not work well.

So the % should just be the total Prize pot and no other variables involved.

I will give you a scenario

total prize pot: $1260

Suggested
name,Recipient,Award,Amount,Points,Awarded To
1st Place,Rank 1,40.00%,$500.00 ,0,Michael B
2nd Place,Rank 2,23.00%,$285.00 ,0,Jim V
3rd Place,Rank 3,13.00%,$160.00 ,0,Steve F
4th Place,Rank 4,10.00%,$125.00 ,0,Doug F
5th Place,Rank 5,8.00%,$100.00 ,0,Maria P
6th Place,Rank 6,6.00%,$75.00 ,0,Ian G
,,,,,
,,,"$1,245.00 ",,

Adjusted
Name,Recipient,Award,Amount,Points,Awarded To
1st Place,Rank 1,$450.00 ,$450.00 ,0,Michael B
2nd Place,Rank 2,23.00%,$165.00 ,0,Jim V
3rd Place,Rank 3,13.00%,$95.00 ,0,Steve F
4th Place,Rank 4,10.00%,$70.00 ,0,Doug F
5th Place,Rank 5,8.00%,$55.00 ,0,Maria P
6th Place,Rank 6,6.00%,$40.00 ,0,Ian G
7th place,Rank 7,$75.00 ,$75.00 ,0,Tim W
,,,,,
,,,$950.00 ,,

So, it looks like you took first place, which was set at 40% (and that was $500), and made it a fixed amount of $450 instead.  This left you with percentage-based prizes totalling only 60%, and $450 basically removed from the part of the prize pool available to percentage-based prizes.

I think what you wanted to do was lower the amount that was awarded to 1st place.  There are a number of ways to do this:

(1) Simply lowered the % of 1st place until you got to the amount you wanted.  Then distribute the remaining % to other prizes so that your percentage-based prizes total 100%.

(2) Use the "Adjust by" field to adjust your prize amount.  You'll need to adjust other prizes too, since if you adjust your 1st place by -50 (to get from 500 to 450), you'll be 50 under your prize pool total.  So you could adjust 2nd place, for example, by 50.

(3) Use the prize amount override.  Just override the prize amount to be 450.  You'll still have the same situation as (2), so you'll need to adjust other prizes.

For (2) and (3), you could also just go to other prizes and check "Share leftover pot" to have the remaining 50 automatically distributed.

When you "adjust" or "override" prizes, all prizes are first calculated based on their percentage or fixed amounts, and THEN the adjustment or override is applied.  What this means is that, by overriding 1st place to be 450, it was still *calculated* at 40% (500), and therefore the other prize calculations don't change.

A point that MP made at first, but might not have been clear enough.  If you did nothing else to your prizes except adding the 7th place $75 fixed prize in your example you would have gotten:

name,Recipient,Award,Amount,Points,Awarded To
1st Place,Rank 1,40.00%,$468.00 ,
2nd Place,Rank 2,23.00%,$269.00 ,
3rd Place,Rank 3,13.00%,$152.00 ,
4th Place,Rank 4,10.00%,$118.00 ,
5th Place,Rank 5,8.00%,$94.00 ,
6th Place,Rank 6,6.00%,$70.00 ,
7th Place,Rank 7, $75,$75

Which adds up to $1246  (I assumed rounding to nearest dollar on each prize)

So you just needed to add the right value of 7th place prize, and the computer would have done the rest for you without you changing anything.  (It's a good feature once I figured out how it worked)
