Title: Lock Cell Positions
Post by: thegooser on August 20, 2008, 09:10:29 AM
hi guys...

I want to be able to lock the positions of cells in my layouts so that i can create some really nice looking formats.

At the moment my cells display the information but will move depending on the length of the text. They aren't in a fixed size.

Is there a way to fix the size of the cells so that the cells next to them wont change position?

You can try setting the Height and Width values of your cells, but because the layout attempts to expand to fill your screen, and because contents of cells change, these values are not "absolutes".  If set to values smaller than the contents of the cell, the cell will still be large enough to accommodate its contents.  If the cell is within a column, for example, and you set the width of the cell to a value that is smaller than the width of other cells within the column, you'll see that the cell shrinks in width (so long as the contents allow it to), but this will leave gaps between the sides of the cell and the column in which it resides.  It will take some tinkering.

I definitely agree that absolute heights and widths are required for perfect non-adjusting layouts.  With mine, I set every cell to absolute size, including the overall screen size (1024x768 for mine).  The best tip I can give when working on this is to use Background colors in the cells... just choose random colors.... this will show you the boundaries of the cells (can't use borders since they add actual width/height to the cell on-screen), and allow you to line everything up perfectly... Then just remove the colors and make them invisible... with a single "background" image to hold all your text...  more on mine here..
