Free sound editors

I'm looking for the best, and FREE sound editor.  One that I can combine sounds clips, record over, and easily piece together new ones.   

I'm sure someone out there can guide me to the download.

Take a look at Audacity. May be what you want.

Use it to record, cut, copy, join, mix etc. sounds
