Help Me / Re: Desperate Need of Tournament Scoring Formula
« on: January 11, 2009, 10:08:24 AM »
it helps to tell us what you mean by "in the money"  . . . . in other words, what places are you giving monetary prizes for and does this change based on field size?

also, how do you determine "final table" (how many at final table and is this always the same?)

I understand, although not the part about seating yourself at the same table.

As long as other players are seated randomly, it doesn't matter where you put yourself - you should end up against other players in a random fashion so the program doesn't care where you start out and players shouldn't either, random is random and you are still randomly placed next to other players.

Just a thought.

Certainly tough to build in a remote application to something like an ipod.  Not all users are going to have ipods  :).

How about just using a wireless mouse.  They have pretty good range and a small wireless mouse would sit on a poker table quite well.  I guess some poker table fabrics might not work well with an optical mouse, but suited speed cloth - a common poker cloth - would work very well with an optical mouse.

I just set my laptop up next to my table and I don't have to move anywhere.

So, Corey, for those of us who haven't done the latest update, what do you advise?

  • wait to install update
  • install update and use the posted fix
  • wait until new version of TD comes out that includes the fix as part of the install(?)

General Discussion / Re: Laptop died! During the tournament...
« on: December 16, 2008, 10:34:57 AM »
If you had auto-save on and can get back into the hard drive I would think you would be in good shape.

If you didn't have auto-save on, then you might be out of luck with that tourney.

Good luck.  I have gotten pretty good at making sure autosave is on as I had an issue in a test tourney once and learned my lesson early.

I have my autosave set at 5 minutes, but now that I think of it, I have a newer laptop so I think I will set it for more frequently and also have the auto save for events checked so that it picks up when people are knocked out and such - my old laptop was so slow that the autosave slowed the clock display refresh, so I set an infrequent backup.

Also very pleased with Iron Dog.  Recently ordered a bracelet and they were very helpful and extremely speedy in service (I think I received it the day after I placed my order  :o).

Just can't beat the service and price.

Picture isn't the greatest - doesn't do it justice.

Help Me / Re: Prize Payout Problem
« on: November 14, 2008, 04:26:21 AM »
Did you make your own prize template or do you use a preloaded one - or how do you determine your prizes?

I have never run into this problem, but I made my own template a while back, so I haven't used a preloaded template (although I didn't run into this problem with a stock template either).

I agree with Phaze, the equation seems correct:  Here is the "test" all I get for his equation.  I think there is an additional set of points being given from "points for hits" in the game tab.  I prefer to keep all the points for playing in the equation field rather than have the points being given from a bunch of different spots - then it is easier to see where points are coming from.

This "test all" shows what would happen if everyone had 6 hits, but it will only add the extra 6 points to the person who actually had 6 hits

General Discussion / Re: poker table

I also put a light mist of spray glue on top of the foam before adding the poker cloth.  It really helps so you don't get cloth loosening from the foam and causing little waves in the cloth.  You still pull tight and staple, but the glue mist helps to keep the cloth down and the cloth still easily separates from the foam if you need to replace it.

Check out Scott Keens poker table forum if you haven't already  - all sorts of discussions about gluing on fabric or foam.

Help Me / Re: Recovering the "Main Screen" from the screen sets
« on: August 26, 2008, 09:40:14 AM »
Would he be able to recover it from previous saved tourneys using that main screen in the screen set?

Maybe he hadn't saved any tourneys and maybe it won't come back with the saved tourneys, I don't know.  Just a thought to avoid having to reconstruct - ugh

Help Me / Re: Stupid question about rebuy points...
« on: August 18, 2008, 06:18:38 PM »
Here is my tournaments points forumula that I put in the "points for playing" field of the game tab:

(n-r+2) + if(r==3, 1, 0) + if(r==2, 2, 0) + if(r==1, 3, 0) - nr - na*0.5 + 0.5*nh

Essentially this forumula gives you the number of players minus rank + 2 (I do the "plus 2" so that everyone gets points who plays).

Then I give 3 bonus points for the person who gets 1st place, 2 bonus points for 2nd place, and 1 bonus point for 3rd place. (the "if" series in the equation above).

Then you see "- NR".  That subtracts 1 point for each rebuy (I only allow 1 rebuy, but if I allowed more, it would subtract a point for each time the person did a rebuy).

Then you see "- na*0.5".  That subtracts 1/2 a point for each add-on (again I only allow 1).

Then you see "+nh*0.5".  That adds a point for each hit someone has during the tourney.

Hope that helps.

You can of course set up your points structure however you want.  If you want to subtract a bunch of points for someone doing a rebuy you can easily set this up in your points formula

I just have my formula set up to subtract a single point for a rebuy, so there is some point "punishment" for rebuying, but in my view, if you allow a rebuy then that is part of the strategy of the tournament and someone shouldn't be set back to middle position for doing something that is part of the established structure of the tourney.  One of the advantages of a rebuy is also to get more money in the pot, so you may not want to discourage people rebuying.

My points formula is essentially a number of players minus rank, with a couple bonus points for finishing top 3.  So, in a 20 person tourney the winner will get around 23 points.  So the loss of a single point doesn't mean that much, but over the season, the loss of points through rebuys can affect the season winner.

Another way to "punish" a rebuying player is to only allow a "short-rebuy".  I also use this as part of my tourney structure.

I do 2000 chip buy-in tourneys (for say $20).  Then if someone rebuys, they can only get 1500 chips (for a discounted price of $15).  I like this approach because then the person rebuying is relatively short-stacked, but still can play a good bit longer and may even make a comeback depending on what level they rebuy at (I allow a single rebuy through 1st 3 rounds).

FWIW

Help Me / Re: Formula help please

It seemed to me like player7 was wanting the player who had the most accumulated points in the tourney series to get 50 points, not the player who wins that specific tournament???

You might want to clarify that 50 points player7 - I might be mistaken

General Discussion / Re: Seating and manual set chips
« on: July 16, 2008, 12:34:07 PM »
That is why I have come up with this scheme where for every tourney I seat the players (randomly), then I don't unseat them, I just hit the randomize seating button to randomize them again.

So I do have a rule for doing this.

Now, in essence, the couples tourneys are pretty casual low buy-in and nobody knows what is going on in terms of my seating rules anyway, but I like to have a "rule" that I do follow for each tourney.

This method does seem to reduce the number of couples sitting next to one another (could totally be my imagination - as a scientist I certainly understand that it is easy to see patterns, not easy to see randomness).  Its not a big deal, but it kind of makes the social part of the game a bit better if I start out with couples not together as much . . . . of course that can change after a few bust outs, but there you go.

It is interesting to find out that the RNG comes from Windows or IE.  I figured it was something you built into TD yourself.  I didn't even know that Windows or IE had a RNG somewhere in there.
