Title: TD.exe a Threat?
Post by: T-Bone on October 08, 2017, 09:03:29 AM
Three different anti-virus products identify td.exe as a threat and quarantine file. Anyone else encounter this?

Which three?

I've already submitted false-positive reports to AVG and Avast.  Those two should no longer misidentify TD.exe as infected with malware.  For those who demand proof, responses are below.  :)

Hello,

AVG, Avast, Bitdefender. Avira does not show TD as threat but locks registry so when I try to run TD my key is not recognized.

Interesting.  AVG and Avast should stop whenever the latest update is applied.  Can't say for Bitdefender - I'll look into it.  Makes me wonder if all of these anti-virus vendors get their virus definitions from the same place (they likely do).  One would hope that once they recognize a false positive it would be sent back to the provider to update their definitions, and thus all of the vendors using those definitions would get the update...

That's a lot of anti-virus.  Do you actually run all of them?

No, no! I was running AVG when problem surfaced. Tried the others to see if one would not return the false positive as MalwareBytes Anti-Malware had no problem with the file.

I have the latest update of bitdefender with no problem.

As unfortunate as that is, it shouldn't have affected the running tournament.  TD.exe basically launches the app and then exits.

Seems pretty clear to me these security products are all using the same virus definitions.  I do hope they all get updated soon.  I'll submit more false-positive reports to these vendors.

My TD was also zapped by AVG. I got around it though.

I am also having this problem on 3.4.1, but it's coming from Windows Defender Security Center on Win10.

FWIW, I put in a work around where I told Windows Defender to exclude C:\Program Files (x86)\The Tournament Director 3

So, Corey, I'm really trusting you not to pull a CCleaner and include malware in your software!

I am also having this problem on 3.4.1, but it's coming from Windows Defender Security Center on Win10.

This one is very interesting to me because I use Windows Defender/Microsoft Security Essentials on two Windows 10 PCs and a Windows 7 PC and none have ever flagged it.

I'm running Windows 10 Fall Creator's Update.  Maybe that's the difference?

Yes I have the same problem with version 3.4.1, but it's coming from Windows Defender Security Center on Windows 10 Pro.

Thanks for reporting everyone.  If I could ask that you also report the name that your anti-virus software gives the threat, that would be very helpful, too.  For example, Avast and AVG give the detection the name "Win32:Malware-gen".  Most anti-virus vendors ask that the detection name be reported as well.

So far false positive submissions have been made for AVG, Avast, Windows Defender, Comodo, and BitDefender.

Microsoft has responded with a "not malware" reply.  Hopefully Windows Defender will stop tagging TD.exe as malware shortly...

I am using Trend Micro and the program was flagged. If anyone experiences problems with TD.exe just add the folder or application to the exception list under your antivirus program. That will solve the problem.

I've submitted a false positive report to McAfee and Trend Micro.
