Flash Drive Install?
« on: February 20, 2013, 07:39:51 PM »
Hey Corey,

Is it possible to install TTD on a flash drive, where it would be fully operational no matter which computer it were to be run on? Not a huge deal if not, just a question that came to mind just now

Yes you can... as long as you have your datastore on your flashdrive... and your flashdrive always uses the same drive letter...

On my side, i run TD on a flash drive, but my datastore is in my documents folder... the only reason is because i run TD since version 2, and my being too lazy to convert everything back like it should, i coded everything with my datastore residing on my documents folder...

I run TD from 3 different PC in my house... all with the same configuration.... from the flashdrive, so it can be done.

3 different PCs, and only one download, or did you have to download on all? I'm looking to start up some leagues where I'm living now, and I know that some, if not all the locations would have computers in addition to my laptop. If I don't have to install on each individual computer, I don't want to. (Otherwise I can always use my own laptop, once my effin refund gets in)

There's no reason you shouldn't be able to do this.  There are licensing issues, however.

The software does not store anything in the Windows registry (except for the license).  So it takes the folder from which it is run as its "home" folder.  Program components must be in the correct places in that folder.  This makes it essentially portable.

The location of the preferences file, the data store file, and the default Data Store will be determined by the system, since they are in the currently logged-in user's Documents folder.  That presents a slight issue, since it will always look in that folder.  I'm not sure how one would handle this today.

In version 3.2 (still in beta), you can create a file in the same folder as the TD which will specify where to find the preferences and data store files.  This would allow you to store the preferences file, the data store file, and the Data Store itself on the flash drive.  The only issue I see here is that the flash drive might be mapped to a different drive letter on different PCs.  If you can map it to a consistent drive letter, it should work.

But your TD license won't travel with you, since it is stored in the registry.  Meaning you'd have to use the trial period, or install your license on any machine you use.  Here's the FAQ on that:

Cool. Question came to me as I found an accounting program for my non-poker related business, and its 100% portable via usb.

Thank you both!

yes Corey, you are right, the only thing that doesn't follow up is the license registration...

And as per licensing, you should not be using the software with the same license on more than one PC at a time...  which is the reason why i got the license installed on all my home computers, because i NEVER know in advance from which PC i will run TD on a poker night... it all depends on availability (wife, and 3 kids uses a lot of PC's in the house... i have to use what's left and available!!!!)
