50 man tournament
« on: February 17, 2010, 08:34:04 PM »
I would like is input.  I was asked to structure a tournament this weekend.  The tournament will have 50 to 60 players and they want it to end in 5 hours.  I'm trying to structure a blind system.  So here it is (buy-in $1500, 20 minute rounds, add-on after the 5th round and no more re-buys):

25-25
25-50
50-100
75-150
100-200
200-400
300-600
400-800
500-1000
600-1200
700-1400
800-1600
1000-2000
1500-3000
2000-4000
2500-5000

I'm thinking about making the rounds 15 minute long.

I would like your input fellow players.

I am thinking something like this, if I may:

I am throwing this together pretty quick, maybe it can help!

1,500 chips x 60 players = 90,000 (not including rebuy/addons)

Also, I would not add-on chips after the 5th round, this adds more chips to the total and may not thin the field as quickly. Personally, I would advise against it. Rebuy/addon UP TO Round 5 would be fine, given the low chip count and structure.

if lowest chip is $25    (if lowest is $5 chip, then maybe start with 5-10, 10-20, then go to 25-50)

25-50
50-100      20 minute blinds
100-200
break - 10 minutes
150-300
200-400     20 minute blinds
300-600
break - 10 minutes
400-800
500-1000    20 minute blinds
600-1200
break - 10 minutes
800-1600 ante 50
1000-2000 ante 100  blinds are now 15 minutes
2000-4000 ante 200
3000-6000 ante 300
break - 10 minutes
FINAL HOUR - 10 minute blinds
4000-8000 ante 500
5000-10000 ante 1000
6000-12000 ante 2000
10000-20000 ante 4000

In any league/home game I have played in that has a time limit, the final hour goes by fast to:
1. narrow the field
2. end the game on time
3. promote aggressive play

The WSOP in the past has done 25/25 blinds, and I've done it in my tourneys.  Seems to work for us.

agro,

What is the starting stack as this will be fundanmental to your structure...

If you are starting at 25/25 i'd be looking for a tourney with a starting stack of around 3,000 chips (120bb) whereas 5,000 or more would usually start at 25/50 given your time constraints,  given that you want it finished in 5 hours I think antes will be essential but this all hinges on your starting stack.

An important thing to consider is how deep you want it, if you are having a deep/super/mega stack then you are going to need aggressive blinds that will create an 'elastic band' effect - for example if you look at your tourney the average stack at the half way point will likely be short stacked, whereas if you run a 'deep structure' with a smaller starting stack you could theoretically have poker played all the way through, however many non-discerning players will not realise it and will complain that they have no chips to play with but in reality the deep stack is actually worse.  But then with a deep stack players are going to realise when they get deeper into the tourney that the structure flawed given the time limits.

For a 25/50 start with rebuys I don't think you can realistic-lay start with any more than 4,000 chips in order to avoid the blinds shooting up that quick that the button does not get one orbit in during each level

for a 25/25 start with rebuys i'd be looking at 2,000 chips prob.

I want to thank everybody for their assistance.  The structure turn out good.  The tournament lasted 4 hours and 40 minutes.  Once again thank you to everyone that posted a reply.
