Title: a almost tragic occurance.
Post by: URSHARKB8 on January 29, 2007, 09:08:15 AM
hi all, this is what happened.

sat nights game, 14 people. $25 buy-ins.
about 15 minutes into the game and someone needs to rebuy, and then another back to back.
so as i'm getting to my laptop to do the knock out rebuy thing, i pull the the laptop to me and poof!!!! screen goes black!!!!
OMGOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!

the power cord caught and pulled out!!!  my battery doesnt work, so it has to be plugged in.

im crying.

i get the cash and give the chips anyways.
load up TD again and "oh no" auto save was off!!
but only took me a couple minutes to drag peeps back to the right seat.
i check the auto save box.

then i thought, what if that happened deep in the game.??????

so just to remind everyone, ALWAYS CHECK AUTO SAVE WHILE RUNNING A GAME!!!!!!

thanks.

Been there done that - we were 2 hours in to a big game and then out of nowhere the laptop died on me.

Logged back on - no autosave so quick as a flash the old tried and tested pad and pen came out.

I now have a brand new laptop and all is well (Autosave is no on permently)

I've had something similar happen too, asked someone to press a button on the laptop, not realising they weren't computer literate.

The pressed the power button...

It would be good if there was a way of turning on 'Auto Save' by default. I still find myself forgetting to do it.

Auto-save is intentionally off by default, to prevent a different type of almost tragic occurrence.  The kind where you are going to run your second tournament, so you load the last one you played and reset it, and auto-save automatically saves it and presto - you've lost the results to your first tournament.

I once lost tournament results for a game that had over 30 people in it.  This was a league event so points counted.  Just realize it's a game of poker, not a game of life.  I asked everyone to assist in recalling other peoples finish.  It worked our, or so I think,  but in the scheme of things it wasn't really tragic :)

FYI, implemented for the next version:

- "Auto save is not enabled" reminder on the Settings page (just below the tabs) when auto save is off and your tournament has changed.
- Preference to auto save after events.  This causes the tournament to be automatically saved every time a player buys-in, busts-out, rebuys, etc, in addition to every x seconds.  Something you probably want to enable  just before you start the tournament.

Exactly the reason why if i DO pull up an existing tourney from my save files, the first thing i do is 'save as' another file name.  Then I proceed to start the tourney and check auto save.  I've had nightmares of the computer crashing or all power going off during a big game and thank goodness it's not happened yet.  I say yet because we are in a small town and power outages are quite frequent.

After reading these I thought I would set mine to auto save.
After 2 hours of looking in help and searching through every tab, I found it.

Just for those of you who are pretty thick like me.

Auto save can be found on the games tab top left handside.

Cheers
