Title: Version 3.0 is now available
Post by: Corey Cooper on October 31, 2011, 12:21:51 AM
Version 3.0 has been released.

Download it at http://www.thetournamentdirector.net/download.html

This has been a long development cycle and a long beta test period.  Version 3.0 represents the largest code update so far in the software's history.  Much of it is "under the covers", so to speak, and I hope it goes a long way towards making incremental improvements to the software much easier and faster.

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the beta testing.  Your feedback was crucial to making this a solid release.

Still?  It works for me.  Do you have Javascript disabled?

Alternate web browser solved the problem. Thanks.

It's a caching issue.  I just ran into it on another computer.  I'll update the page to let people know to press Refresh on the browser if it doesn't open.

Edit: updated the code in the page instead.  Should work now for everyone.

worked fine for me, but no copy and paste.

Thanks Magic_fubu.  Try the "Click here for details" link on the upgrade page again.

Think I figured out why it was opening up to the same page, cause it happened to me again just now. I was right clicking and selecting open in new tab/window, and it would re-open the page. However, if we just click the link, it'll open normally, at least with Google Chrome it will. Side note, form filled out, and shall await the email.  Thanks again!

Follow the instructions.  I need the information from your installation of the software.  The snippet on that instructions page is a sample.  And use copy/paste.  If you try to enter your Store Code manually, you will get it wrong.

So I seen. Correcting it as we speak. Sorry!

Edit - Did it via copying to clipboard. It should take this time.

Nice Corey! I have a big tourney tomorrow but I think I will use 2.6b5 since I have it setup and ready to go. I downloaded V3 and will play with it later this week and see how it goes. Looks like some great new features.

Where can I read more, "How-to-do" etc. about the new feature Status Updates to url? Tried to find some info in Help but couldn't find it.

Yes, in my desperate attempts to finally get this version out, I have completely disregarded the user manual.  I do intend to, hopefully sooner rather than later, update the user manual.  In the meantime, you'll have to settle on asking me questions here. :)

Can you quickly explain how the Status Update works? (i didnt see it on the help tab

Title: Re: Version 3.0 is now available
Post by: Corey Cooper on November 01, 2011, 11:26:55 AM
Well, what do you want to know?  :-)

The Status Updates feature will write the status of the tournament to a file, or send it to a URL, at a specified interval.  Much like Auto-save, you can have it update on a timer (basically), and optionally update after significant things happen (someone buys-in, someone busts-out, etc).

What it writes to the file or sends to the URL is more or less a list of variables and their values, corresponding to the same variables available to you in formulas.  The best way to see what is happening is to configure the Status Updates to write the data to a file, then go look at the file (Notepad will suffice).

It is intended for a program to be able to consume the output, and isn't really intended for human consumption.  Some people had mentioned wanting to be able to post updates to their website in real time.  Using this feature, the TD could be configured to POST the data to the website automatically.  On the website, PHP or some other scripting language (for example) could process the data when it comes in, perhaps putting it into a local database.  A page could be constructed that would read from the database and output something intended for browsers.

This first version has a fair amount of data.  However, since the feature has never actually been used at this point, I was hoping for some feedback from people who will actually use it, so it can be improved in the future, or removed if it's not a useful feature.

I think the statusupdates can be very useful, i really hope that someone with the skiills can make us some useful examples.

I think that a "live update" feature for my website would be a great funktion.

Image the possibilities to have a smartphone adapted statuspage so that anyone could get live updates on their phone for example.

Any chance that player names, and bust-out player names and maby even the current ranking (chipstacks) will be included in the status updates?

You would have to have a dynamic page on your website that would accept the information, and then do something with it.

There's no facility for logging in, but it is something that could be added in the future.  I could, for example, add the ability to create your own HTTP headers that go with the request.  But personally I would think it's unnecessary.  If it's a page that only accepts data it is expecting, there's very little need for security.

Possibly in the future.  As I said, the idea is that the output is designed to be consumed by another program.

The only issue I had installing TD3 (and for me it was a minor annoyance for about 90 seconds was that all my export templates were pverwritten (wasn't worried...I had at least 10 separate backups in the last month to fall back on). My layouts were untouched. I don't use the default data store either.

I ran my first tournament last night, as I've seen some others do as well. Besides the one issue that I posted via my cell phone last night, everything else went off without a hitch. Keyboard buttons worked to add and remove players from the tournament, bust out, and undo; my buttons all worked without issue, the only thing that I had a complaint about last night, wasn't even TD related - the stand for one of my speakers broke (doh!), but still is usable....  One thing I noticed right away that's different from the beta versions: the background on the autosave (which I used): red when off, yellow when on and unsaved info exists, and green when on and no unsaved info exists - great way to quickly tell the save state of the tournament!

Actually, now that I think about it, One other issue I had was the extended display settings didn't transfer over... But that was easy enough to fix with only a LCD display.

I got a problem, well I think it was a problem.

I have been using the beta for a while now, I have been reading all the posts.
I thought OK I have a few weeks brake shortly so this is when I planned to down load 3.

I opened TD last night and it would let me in till I upgraded to 3, I wanted to do a back up before I moved to 3, anyway I updated to 3.
I only realised today that I could have opened TD while offline and then done the back up.

OK now I have 3 I need to purchase a new licence, how do I find out if I eligable for a discount ?.

Was getting ready for the game last night.

Set all the game up and saved.

When I was at location, open the saved game ready for starting and got some faults coming up, emailed to support, the game did run OK with no noticeable problems.

Ok i have just found out after trying to run a tournament tonight that my TD no longer works, it says "This BETA version of the software has expired. Please upgrade to the latest version."

First off a warning would have been nice within the program so i wasn't left without all my data & not able to run a tournament tonight. Secondly how do i get the program i paid for 6 months ago to work, because it seems downloading the new version requires yet another licence as my current one doesn't work with this new software. I have no issue with this new software requiring ppl to buy it, if they want to use it but disabling the program i have paid for so we have no choice but to upgrade is a little underhanded.

Am i missing something here or is the only option to use TD again is to download version 3 & pay again ??
It's been a long day and turning up without all my data & a working TD was the icing on the cake.

Any help would be appreciated

A timer was installed because this was a major upgrade and leaving people to use b5 would have prevented many from upgrading (and paying) for the new release. It was stated on the forums that this timer was in place. Maybe a warning when starting b5 (alongside the commercial license warning) could have worked too.
As for TD3, it is a brand new installation and therefore you have a 30 day trial which can and will use all your information that you had with b5. Back up what data you have in case (all you have to do is go to your The Tournament Director 2 folder and copy it to your desktop. After you install TD3, you may qualify for a rebated copy of TD3 or even your copy free. The download page will supply details on how to go about finding out if you qualify or not. If you were using b5 there is a good chance your copy will be free.
If you need any more info or help, reply and we'll give you a hand as soon as we can. (I check the forums every few hours unless I'm sleeping)

I can confirm this for the free upgrade for b5 users. As long as you were using it before the date Corey stated (Oct 24th or 25th, I believe), then you will qualify.

I have been using the beta version since i purchased my licence back in May (23/05/11) yet i have entered my details in the requested discount box and have only received a 50% discount code. I'm not being ungrateful here, i have received a lot of help of these forums regarding this software but there is no way i'm paying again for a piece of software i have only received 6 months of use out of.

I'll try to get V2 working again

I never the first time as i wasn't sure what it was, so i resubmitted the request with the right details and waiting on a reply now. Not sure if i've messed it up not submitting it right the first time though.

I can't get V2 working with the data i was using on the beta, so at the moment my choice is revert back to V2 and redesign & resubmit all my data or upgrade and pay again....so not happy at the moment but i'll wait to see if Corey gets back to me.

He's usually good about that. I know I typed in the store code for the upgrade the first time, and I got a reply back stating it was the wrong code within a couple hours max. Went back in, did a copy/paste, resubmitted, and within another couple hours, I had the key for V3. Can't promise he'll be that quick with you, but he's typically good about doing it within the 24 or 48 hours that it states it should arrive in.

This was never the intention.  The expiration date was hard-coded into the program with the expectation that it wouldn't expire until at least 3 to 4 months after version 3 was released.  But clearly all I could do at the time was guess as to when I would be done, and clearly I guessed wrong.

As the date drew near, my backup plan was to release beta 6, which would be exactly the same as beta 5 but with an extended expiration date.  I think in your case it probably would not have mattered, as beta 5 still would have expired on you.  To find beta 6 would have meant looking though the forums, which is where I posted that beta testers would get a free license for version 3.

Thanks for providing this, Magic_fubu.

Auto-size.  The key to the mystery.  Auto-size automatically pauses the tournament clock, but it doesn't check first to see if it's in a Countdown to a specific time.  That should be easy enough to fix.  In fact, before finishing this post I created a patch and uploaded it.  Try it now and see if it's fixed.  You may have to start the TD, wait 30 to 60 seconds, then exit and start again.  The first time you start it, it should download the patch.  The next time it should apply the patch.  You can check your "patch level" on the Preferences tab by pressing the "System Info" button.  Look for the line "TD Patch Level".  The fix is in patch level 3.  Restart if you're not at patch level 3.

Many a times I have re-szed my screens in mid-tournament and hadn't realized the clock was paused. I now know it pauses the clock and still forget on occasion and walk away from my machine. A few minutes later somebody realizes the clock is paused and  go running to restart it and try to figure out how much time was lost and if it is worth resetting the clock. Can the auto-pause be removed from the auto-size? I can't see any use or the clock to actually pause when resizing the screen..
Title: Re: Version 3.0 is now available
Post by: Corey Cooper on November 09, 2011, 08:49:34 PM
The software is attempting to resize everything on the screen in such a way as to make it all fit within the confines of your physical screen size.  If the screen is changing, it makes it a little more difficult.  Pausing the clock doesn't make the screen stop changing (if you've got the time of day displayed, clearly that's going to continue to change), but it stops a lot of the change, making resizing more likely to be successful.

Hi
I just downloaded and installed version 3.
I am currently using version 2.6.b4
Installation went ok.

When I ran the program I got the error message on start up that there was an error reading my preferences file and the program loaded with the standard defaults.
This meant that if I wanted to continue using the program I would have to go through all my tournament set ups and re configure them.

I closed the program and opened version 2.6.b4 and I got the same error.

I have now un-installed version 3 and restored my database in version 2.6.b4
All is now working as it should.

Am I doing something wrong?

Regards
Clive

A few minutes later somebody realizes the clock is paused and  go running to restart it and try to figure out how much time was lost and if it is worth resetting the clock. Can the auto-pause be removed from the auto-size? I can't see any use or the clock to actually pause when resizing the screen..
Luckily i have  never had this fault, but  some times I forget to restart the clock. So i created an event so that when the clock is stopped during the game it plays the Buzzer sound, 3 times every 10 seconds

Am I to understand that very soon my version 2.6.b4 is going to expire?

Sounds like you're running into an issue that is apparently affecting only certain people.  Since you have a backup, could you send the backup file to me so that I can take a look at your preferences and see what the issue is?  support@thetournamentdirector.net

Yes, but not "very soon".  I have a little more leeway with the betas before beta 5, but it will eventually expire.

Hi Corey
I have re-installed version 3 and the error did not repeat itself until I ran version 2.6.b4
2.6.b4 gave the error and when I closed the program and ran version 3, I got the error again.
I resolved this by restoring the database in version 3 and everything is as it should be.

I have just run the program again to fine tune a saved tournament for tonight and when I loaded the tournament I was asked if I wanted to load the embedded layout as well.
I selected 'yes' and an error report was generated.
The email option button did not work but the copy to clipboard button did so I copied it in to an email and sent to support.
Below is a copy of the report:-

I can send you a copy of the backup file if you need it but it is 16MB....

I believe there might be an issue with converting the preferences from b4 to 3.0 (and possibly from 2.X to 3.0), but I don't see an issue with my test files so any help is appreciated.  Please send me the 16MB file if you don't mind.

I just issued a patch that I hope will fix the error message you're seeing (and a bunch of other people are seeing).  It is in Patch Level 5, and your TD should automatically download it.  To check your Patch Level:

So what about the screen transitions that I added after 2.6.b5?  Love them?  Hate them?  Couldn't care less about them?  Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueller?  :)

I think they're pretty neat! My current layout only has one screen during play so I only see the transition from pre to tournament and from tournament to break...but it does look visually pleasing

I like'em...although they're a little slow to execute on my two remote screens.

Yeah, they work great if your screen is pretty small (and your machine is pretty fast).  On large screens (which today most are) ... not so much, especially if you've got a background image.  I realized they were a possibility when I had to overhaul part of the layout to work around the IE9/Win7 background image flicker problem once and for all.  Implemented the first transition in about 20 minutes.  Perfecting them took quite a bit longer.  :-\

The flicker fix also made it possible for the background image to stretch to fit your screen size, which is a plus.

Lightning fast on my 27" monitor and quad-core I7 PC. Lag comes in between netbook (fast on netbook's tiny screen) I use to run tournaments & two 32" LCD TVs used for display. Connection is through Warpia (wireless) adapters. Certainly not a big deal, especially since my screens only change pre-tournament and at breaks. Even with the lag those are some cool effects!

Hey Corey - Just noticed I'm on patch level 7, courtesy of the handy-dandy Patch Info button on the preferences tab - great idea & addition! Nice to see what was fixed with the patches :)

Thanks.  I actually added that with Patch 6 (which you know 'cause you read the patch info).  I'm really liking this feature.  Wish I had thought of it sooner!
