Use of alternates
« on: February 23, 2008, 06:14:07 PM »
Hi, all!

This is my first time posting and I have run several searches on this topic and can't seem to find anything that deals with it.  We run weekly tournaments (2 every Fri night) on the latest version of TD.  We only have 2 tables (10 players max each) and every once in a while we end up going over our max players of 20 and sometimes have 21 or 22.  Last Friday we had 23 and instead of trying to accomodate them on our tables, we set up an alternates list as I see some casinos do.  Once a player is busted out of the tournament we fill that seat with an alternate waiting to get in.  The problem that arose was regarding our point system.  We award points based upon the following formula:

n+m+nh-r-nr

So alternates that come in after the fact actually gain a small advantage that even though they have not played in the tournament, they automatically start receiving points for outlasting the player who's seat they took over.  I don't really know how to manage alternates in TD.  Is there some method or has anyone come up with a good work around for it?  Thanks to anyone that can give me a lead on how to manage this.

Noel

By the way, since we had no method for doing this, we came up with a very non-logical way of addressing the problem by simply making manual deductions from the alternates final score.  In other words, alternate1 was reduced by 1, alt2 was reduced by 2 and alt3 was reduced by 3.  We did this so that they did not automatically get a point for outlasting the players that busted out before them.  Very unscientific way to approach it but we had to think of something on the fly.

Can someone show us the error of our ways?

I can't think of any way to do this automatically.  If there were variables in the Points for Playing dialog for buy-in time or buy-in round, you might be able to do it that way, but then again, that might not tell you anything.  If player A was in the alternates list, and bought in after the general field of players, he/she still might buy-in during the first round, so that wouldn't buy you anything.  I think no matter how you implement this, without the ability to place certain players into a "main" list of players and other players into a "alternate" list of players, it's still going to take a human eye to determine how to award points to those players.
