When you "chop" one or more prizes, you aren't changing the prizes themselves. You're only changing how those prizes are awarded. With your average tournament, each prize is typically awarded to a single player. With a chop, one or more prizes may be pooled and divided among multiple players. The award is different, but the prize remains the same.
