Title: Layout
Post by: zvjerko on December 04, 2010, 12:17:48 PM
Could it be like in previous version or to have an option so that we do not have to save a layout separately? When you load a saved tournament the layout is in it. Like you did with hand timer, check box to start countdown immediately. To put an option, save layout with tourney or not? I think it is much easier to load a tourney where is everything is set and there is an option to load a different layout already.

ZV - it's probably not going to happen. Reason being that with the old way to save, it saved EVERYTHING - layout, sound, events, and whatnot. This led to huge save files and some lag in loading tournaments. To counteract that, Corey instituted a way to save everything separately, which cut down significantly on save files, and sped up loading times.

Magic_fubu is correct.  In fact, the layout is often 2/3 of the data saved in a tournament file.  Separating it makes loading and saving tournaments much faster, and makes running Stats a lot quicker.  With tournaments saving much faster, auto-save is more reasonable, and it may allow me to implement a background save, which would be a big help when disaster strikes during a tournament.

However, your question has made me wonder if it would be feasible to make it an option to save the layout with the tournament.  I will look into that.

the way it is now is to me far more sensible as layouts should not be part of a tournament.

Thinking back to the way it was makes me cringe slightly, any software I use including casino software runs the layout as a seperate entity which is far more practical, I can remember searching through old tournaments to try and find a specific layout etc, now my layouts are standardised.

For what it's worth, if it's feasible, I would probably make use of it, as I typically only use one layout, but my concern would be on if the program would start to lag with constantly updating (instinct says it wouldn't, but...)  Sure, it's nicer to have everything save separately, sometimes it's just as nice to have everything load at once :)

I believe that option would be nice.

If you've used 2.6 and have loaded a tournament saved with a previous version, you've seen that the software will ask you if you want to load the layout that was saved with the tournament.  So most of the code is actually already there.  I'm envisioning it as a preference, as opposed to something the software asks you every time you save a tournament.

I'd agree in that it would make more sense to have it in the preference tab as opposed to popping up with every save. Also just noticed the Dashboard in that tab that I've seen a few posts about - very nice addition :D
