Title: Bounties but not Bounty Chips - Your thoughts please
Post by: Radium on October 21, 2008, 04:50:54 AM
I am running a 10 week points for playing league, Which includes points for hits, rebuys etc... but same as last time it's the same people that sit at the top 2 or 3 and it doesn't seem to change.

I have run many Tourneys, but I want to add an extra incentive to this one by mixing the top of the board up.

I have toiled with having bounty chips but players won't fork out for them. a

So I thought I would try this, place "Wanted Bounties" on the 2 points leaders and the bounty being 5000 chips respectively. If you take the 1st Place or 2nd Place points leader out you get 5000 chips which is basically a buy in. to play with in that game.
I had heard of something similar being run at another venue, but I'm not sure of the details.

Buy in is $10 which gets you 5000 in chips with unlimited rebuys for the first hour. With around 20 players and as many rebuys  also.

If I did do it. I would probably just make it for the first hit.

Do you think that this would be fair, or would it interfere to much with the chip count.

I find that tournys with unlimited rebuys can be very hectic and busy during the rebuy period... Depending on how aggressive your players are, there will be lots of chips being moved around and added to the tourny... I don't think an extra freebee rebuy will make much difference, however I don't think it will really add to the excitement of a bounty, especially in creating the excitement that you want to create
What might get people into the bounty thing a bit more is offering a nice point bonus to a bounty...

One thing though, if your season has already started, I would recommend not implementing any changes until season is over. If the season hasn't started, make sure your players know about the rule change, otherwise I think some people may find this very unfair

I use bounties this way: I put a 50 point bounty on the head of the person who won the previous tournament. In the Prizes tab, I select bounty on player, and over on the right, set it to points and then enter in a little bit of info to denote it on the list of prizes. If the previous winner is not able to make it, then there is no bounty. if he/she shows up to the next one after that, I then have 2 bounties. the winner who did not make it and the one who won the last one. This way they cannot avoid the bounty on their head. What's more, if the person with the bounty attached to them happens to win, they get their own bounty points as well. For me, this works very easy for me and we don't have to worry about bounty chips. I use the points for buy-in (50 pts), points for playing formula (n-r+1)*50, 25 points for a hit, 25 additional points for 3rd, 50 additional for 2nd, and 100 additional for the winner. Also, the winner gets a 10% chip bonus the next time they play as well. I used to do a free entry and 5% for the first eliminated, but then we started to do free tournaments and I got away from the 1st eliminated (I found out social gambling in my state is illegal and they are cracking down on it. Word of mouth travels fast in my area and I have been visited once. Fortunately we play for free and anyone that shows up that I don't know doesn't play. Family and close friends and anyone that I used to play with in area leagues before those places stopped playing)

You see my issue is that this venue is a chartered club, they approached me and to run poker tourneys  which I have been doing for around 2 seasons now, in 2nd season at present.
They wanted this game on offer to their members and also hoped to encourage new members to join up.
Now I am also a TD of another venue in town, which the season is on a break, so a group of experienced players have drifted over, which is good, but they aren’t really supporting the venue by buying any eats or drinks nor have any of them joined up.  Under the  chartered clubs rules you can only enter the club 3 times before you have to become a member, but they have made a special allowance to waver this.

A lot of the clubs actual members that are playing are very new to the game. Now these people support their venue, they buy drinks, bring their friends along.

But it’s the experienced players that are taking down a lot of the pots and are always at the top of the points leader board.
And what this is creating is a steady decline in actual members and newbies participating, because they are the ones that make majority of rebuys and go home empty handed again and again.

I don’t want the more experienced players to leave but I would like to see some of the winnings shared around a bit to keep it enjoyable for the beginners as well.

So it’s at week 5 (half way through) and I just want to give the beginner players an incentive to take out the point leaders by awarding them some extra chips, as I don’t want to change the points formula while still in season, I though a buy in amount would do.

The people at the top are far more experienced and should be able to handle some new fish trying harder to take them out, and welcome the challenge, But I don’t imagine they will see it like that.

The Tourney points is only for $200 to who is ever at the top of the leaderboard at the end of the 10  weeks.

I know I shouldn’t change the game half way through, and really I don’t think it is. And it’s not the WSOP and I am not changing the points system. It’s just an incentive to take on the big boys and hopefully Keep the Newbies around.

Do you think that as TD I can just make that decision and chuck in a couple of bounties?
I hardly think that the extra chips would change the game dramatically as sometimes we have people rebuying in as many as 7 times.

We need the newbies, because it was started for them without them there won’t be any poker at this venue.

sounds to me like the newer players are playing a little too tight. some of the free leagues i used to play in either played like they had money invested where they played tighter or just plain fast and loose, calling down hands like crazy. for the last 5 weeks, take some of the more promising players aside pre-tournament, and try to get a gauge on how they are playing. encourage these players by opening up their hand selection some and challenge these experienced players, put them to the test by going over the top on them when they raise. once you put your money in, the chips become just that...chips. they don't equal money, tell them. if you put a real monetary value on those chips (this is my money i'm betting), in their minds they are protecting their own money, when in fact that money is, in fact, gone. part of the game is taking chances. as far as bounties go, there was one league i played in where the player who either won the first hand at each table, or the points leader there at each table that particular night was the bounty. everyone started out with 4,000 in chips and a 1,500 chip bonus to whoever took out the bounty. the response to this was a pretty good one, especially when a bounty raised and 5 others called him or raised him back, trying for that 1500 chip bonus. sometimes they would feel like they were getting ganged-up on. it makes it more fun in my mind and can lead to some interesting hands, in my opinion.

As TD you can pretty much do what you want, at the risk of possibly losing your players... I'm not really for extra chips for bounty, but I've never thought of the scenario that you are in, so I'm thinking it might work. I'd be interested to know how it turns out if you decide to do it... I'll lay down one little option, is it possible for the club/pub to donate a small bar tab for a bounty? A pint or two might be the incentive you need to get the drinking regulars to take out the experienced crew  ;D
