NexGen Chips
« on: March 24, 2008, 06:11:08 PM »
I'm contemplating buying some more chips, to go with the new table I just bought. Due to the expense of the table, I can't really afford Paulsons right now (perhaps a couple of years down the line, when I have some more bankroll to play with!) I've heard from numerous players in the town where I live that the NexGen chips are a pretty good replacement, and a great deal less price wise.

I wonder whether or not anyone on here has tried out the NexGens, or perhaps could suggest a suitable, relatively low budget replacements for Paulsons? I am current;y using Dice Chips at the moment, and they have served me well, but my games are getting a little more professional now, with soem higher stakes, and I'd like to have some chips that aren't the same old!

Advanced thanks for any help on this!
Ben

$1.25 a chip, holy crap!

Is it important to get these individualized customized chips? I just buy from Walmart... even the nexgem chips are twice as much as what Walmart sells for. They aren't anything special, just regular clay composite chips... If you are worried about security you can pick up stickers for the printer, create your own chip logo and stick them on yourself. I heard it takes a long time but lets look at price difference

Walmart (this is what I b ought back in January... Some friends have a couple suitcase sized chips but they bought them years ago, not sure how expensive those were

2 cases of 300 chips each  $30 each or $60 total
5 casino trays with 100 chips each @ $5 each or $25 total
______________________________________________
1100 chips at $85

Paulson Chips at $1.25 each
1100 chips
_____________________
$1,375

Nextgen chips
24 tubes at 25 chips each or 600 total for $199.00 or 33 cents each
at the same as I bought mine (1100) you would pay $363

I would head on over to chiptalk.net and read some past posts/reviews.

I don't think it is a horrible idea to consider Nexgens.

If I had it to do over again, I would just go paulson's and be done with it.  I have some mid-line clay chips (injection) from Kardwell and am pleased with them, but I would prefer to have denominated chips and it is tough to beat the feel of a Paulson.

Too much of a pain to try to sell my current tourney set of about 1500 chips, so all I did was put a good bit of money into chips that I will probably upgrade at some point and be doubly invested, when I could have built up a paulson set and would have been happier and probably have less invested in chips in the long run.

I think if you are considering Nexgens, but are really headed towards paulsons, see if you can't push the paulson direction, even if for a smaller chip set to start with that you could add on to.

Not that you couldn't sell the nexgens, but you will take a loss on them since they are pretty common and people might prefer to buy new

Thanks for the various comments on this. I have been following various discussions over on ChipTalk, and have read a couple of reviews on HomePokerTourney too. I've been told that Dunes might be the way to go, and think that I may have found some in an affordable price range for me. I'm fresh out of uni, so you can appreciate that money is a little tight right now for the Paulsons. One thought I had was to try and get a maximum order together with some friends and order in bulk, but unfortunately, none of them seem willing to put their money where their mouth is, so to speak.

Phaze, the Walmart chips certainly sound interesting, but living in the UK they're a little difficult to track down unfortunately! I wonder whether or not you could shoot a few pics for me, and I could then try a few buddies I have in the States, and see if they'd be willing to pick up a case or two (like they did with Oreos a couple of months back ;))

Thanks for the comments and keep them coming!

You've got no Oreos over there?

Here, just scanned a couple chips... pretty basic... good if you want to put stickers on though and price is a hulla lot cheaper: Click here
Here is a pic of the case they come in, mind you mine is only a 300 chip case so two less rows: Click here

So a question for ya's... how much of a difference do those expensive chip make? The ones I use basically feel like a casino chip... I have a friend that has some fancy chips but wasn't overly enthused with them. It seems like a huge price jump for those chips...

Ben, I'd mail ya out a couple boxes if you were interested... and some oreos

Ah, the Dice Chips. Those are actually available over here, and that's what I have at the moment. The reason I was looking to replace them potentially is the fact that to me, they sound a little metallic (probably because of the metal slug in the middle of them). I'm not sure what everyone else's thoughts are on the matter. Thanks for putting up the pictures, and also for your kind offer and willingness to send over some, along with Oreos! I will think long and hard about what I want to do about the whole chip conundrum.

Thanks for all of the help that everyone has given on the subject thus far, and once again for your kind offer Phaze.

They have started introducing them into certain supermarkets now, but they weren't available over here up until two or three weeks ago :(

Well, I've made the move and purchased some Dunes chips. They should be here for the weekend, and if you'd like I can put together a review for everyone, to assist in the decision maybe?

Thanks for all the comments that people have offered on the subject though.

Just my two cents...I have no experience with chips other the the composite. I used the dice and suited ones for a while and went to a 14G chip, but by far the best chips I ever used (I've only been to one casino) were the customized ceramic poker chips at thechiplab.com.

The graphics came out nice and the feel of the chips are exactly what the casino's around the Northeast use. I have gotten MANY compliments from every player in our league over these chips. These were my first ceramic chip I've used and from the name I was very leary because I thought they would crack easy or feel weird, but they really are great chips.

Can you tell I like these chips? If you want to see the ones I designed, they are at the bottom of the website for our home league.

The price for customized chips were slightly under $1/chip...expensive, but well worth it.

I got 2,000 chips (with 4 aces design) from pokergamingproducts.com for about 10 cents per chip. 11.5g casino grade/metal insert. I spent around $250 (with a couple other items and shipping). I would suggest trying them out for some great deals. Everyone at my home game loves them! Not sure if they sell NexGen chips though. They have lots of different styles and weights and the ordering process was pretty easy. Check em out

I just ordered the same chip.  Please let me know what you think of them.  While I have dealt with  pokergamingproducts.com before, I ordered mine from pokerchipmania.com.
